I, like 95% of everyone else on here, has worked in retail at one time in my life. With that comes stories to last a lifetime. Here's one of my favorites...

Had a lady and her daughter come into the store and want a shower radio/cd player. I said sure and took them to our selection. I explained the differences and explained which ones take which batteries. Then came the question I should've seen coming...

"Do you have any that just plug in via ac adapter?"...

She was dead serious and i just stared at her and her daughter with amazement...explained to them the basics of electricity...said a little prayer for them...and walked away lol.

Lots of stupid stories...

When I was 16 my first job was as a cashier (or, as they put it, transactions manager) at a sporting goods store.

1) Girl, maybe 15 y/o, came into the store in a t-shirt and a skirt. Tries to nonchalantly walk out of store wearing a pair of baseball pants, black w/white stripe on side. Dumbest thing I've ever seen. She tried to say that she was wearing them when she walked in, we pointed to the cameras, she started crying. Most severe ownage I've ever seen.

2) Guy walks into store, walks through almost the entire store (he was there for at least 15 minutes). As he was leaving, it was clear he was VERY upset. Our greeter asked him if he could assist him in any way, and he said (and I quote): "This ain't a friggin' grocery store!" I don't know if he was illiterate, or what, but the name of the store doesn't imply groceries in any way...

I have more...the level of stupidity involved in retail work is ridiculous.

I worked at a Wal Mart during college. I was walking out of the bathrooms in the back of the store when this HAAWWWWWWTTTT cashier came walking up rapidly towards the bathroom. I always flirted with her and was about to start some game when RECCCHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH she PUKED all over the floor and the front of the milk cooler. She had a stomach virus and the asshole manager wouldn't ler her leave. She was SO embarrased. It all worked out in the end as we got married Sept 18th last year.

Manager made me walk this crackhead out of the pharmacy, I had to touch her arm and everything. She could barely walk straight. I was 17 at the time, now I would have told him to f off. I was only getting paid $6 an hour.

Uh, exactly what kind of disease do you think you'd get from touching someone's arm?

I work at an old school game store. Board Games, card games, and a few electronic stand alone devices.

One such stand alone is terribly popular because it inflicts pain on the loser. It's called Lighting Reaction. The last person to hit the button on their handle gets a shock after the light turns green.

Someone in my store sold it to this lady. The lady came back the next day furious that we sold her a game that could hurt her son, and wanted to return it. I then explained to her our return policy.

We accept NO returns on ANY electronic game. Any return MUST BE in RESALEABLE condition (NO RIPS ect to the packaging). The game was functioning perfectly, and half of the packaging inside the clear plastic box was missing. I told her we couldn't take it back, and next time she should read the large warning lable on the front of the box.

An hour and a half later, her husband came into the store. He was screaming and yelling at us about how we were breaking the law ect and other stupid crap. He wanted us to take it back and give them their money back. We said no can do. I got the regional manager on the phone (This is on a sunday) to explain to him why. He wouldn't listen, and was slamming his hand on our glass counter top. We told him to take off. He said he was going to call the local news station about how our company was horrible and wouldn't let customers return games and how we sold dangerous games to little kids.

Needless to say it's been one of the funnier topics at my store for a good while. If he had carried on much longer security would have been called so we could laugh even more, as the little old man tried to get this pissed off guy out of the store.

at work a guy wanted to use one printer for 2 laptops, and be able to use it when either one of the laptops were off (hence no printer sharing)

i pointed him to the print servers, after asking questions for a while and trying to figure out his set up i kind of gave up(he didn't know what the hell he had)

"do you have a router?"
him: i dunno
are both computers connected to the internet at the same time
him: what do you mean

anyway thats not the dumbest part

until now he had been physicaly taking the cable from the printer and connecting it to each laptop himself

i asked if it was USB or parallel, he didn't know

so i showed him a USB and a parallel

.... his response was "to be honest i don't know"

im guessing he had a blind fold on when doing the switching

Working at drug store when I was 15, some guy came in.. bought a bottle of cough syrup, went outside of the store, downed the entire bottle, wanderd around the plaza we were in and then came back completely off his face and tried to buy another bottle, needless to say we didn't sell him the other bottle.

Worked at a Lowe's in college and noticed a guy kind of lurking in an aisle watching the doors to the lumber section. I turn my back to him to go help another customer and the cashier yells out that a guy just ran out with a cordless phone. Two other guys I was working with that night go running after him. The people in his getaway car (wtf do you need a getaway car for shoplifting a cordless phone?) take off when they see two guys in Lowe's shirts chasing after their partner in petty crime. I run to the car until I can read the license plate number and write it down on my hand. I look back and the two other guys have tackled the shoplifter and have him pinned to the ground.

Cops show up and arrest the thief and get the license plate number from me. Manager tells us he has to say that we aren't supposed to chase after thiefs but we did a good thing.

there are just way too many to think of off the top of my head...
..the only salvation to retail jobs is if you have good co-workers, because you can bet managers and customers are a PITA to deal with.

I think everyone should have to. I treat people in those places MUCH better now. The same with waiters. Once you see how the job really is, you get a lot more sympathic.
