Tale of two video cards (and Compaq, and power issues)

A few weeks ago I decided my trusty Voodoo3 3500 had bit the dust when I got am "FH no sync, FV no sync" message on my monitor and nothing I could do would raise the machine. I slapped in a Geforce2, which worked fine, and ordered an 8500. However, just a few minutes ago this compaq did the same thing with the Geforce2 running in it. It had previously started up fine several times. And guess what, on a whim I stuck in the voodoo and it's doing just fine now. (and it wouldn't work on any other computer I tried it in, or when I had reinserted it into the compaq before) I think there was a similar issue with this computer when I first got it - I had to change some setting in the bios to "Always on," but that fixed the problem for years. What do you think is up? I can't continually be swapping vcards on this machine here at home because I'll be at school eventually. Thanks.

Are you talking about the "AGP Always Compensate" setting?
(should be Enabled if available) Doubtful that that setting would
be the source of the problem though.

What model Compaq is it? Did you FLASH the Bios on the Voodoo card?

Up until this point I couldn't flash the voodoo's bios because I couldn't get any kind of screen up on the compaq or any other computer with the card. The actual model model# is 5900z. Tech support said to bring it in for a look-see, but frankly I somehow doubt they're going to be able to do what it takes to ferret this one out. Because I got the same message with both cards I somehow doubt that it is liked with a video card issue. The option in the bios was more of a specific compaq option as I remember it something about sensing whether the power was on in the monitor before sending out an image. Yet the problem does not seem to depend on the monitor because I tried switching them too.
Seems like there's some sort of default I must be resetting to when there's a new card in place.
