OK heads up this is a brool story co, stop here if you are expecting an exciting story.
Anyway, I've been playing through the old Dragon Quest series on my DS and really enjoying them. So far I've finished Dragon Quest IV, VI and IX all on the DS. So right after finishing VI the other day, about two weeks back, I decided I had to get V. Thing is I know it's the hardest of the series to get a hold of. So I call all the EB games in the Vancouver area, I think in the US they are Gamestop, and to my surprise I find a store with a used copy of the game out in Coquitlam. About an hours drive away. So me and my father go out there to have lunch and pick up the game. I spend 39.99 + tax on it and take it home. I don't play it that night. I work for the next 2 weeks and don't have time to get to the game, plus I've been playing Scribblenauts as well.
So I finally get to it a few days ago. First thing that seems odd is the manual, I don't always read them but I always take a quick look. It's not a manual but instead just a description of the story with high quality screenshots, Okaaayyy. Odd but no alarm bells go off immediately. I pop the game in my 3DS and get an error instead of the game. Hmm that's odd the 3DS is supposed to be 100% backwards compatible with the DS. So I look at the cartridge a little more carefully and it's far lighter than a regular cartridge. The contacts are also silver in colour instead of copper/gold. Now I'm starting to think it's a fake. So I peel back the label on it and what do I see? Screws! WTF, screws on a DS cartridge?! These things are glued together, not screwed. I open it up and there IS a circuit board in there so nothing really looks odd there. There is also a "serial number" on the back of it which I quickly Google. Turns out this "serial number" is on the back of lots of these pirated carts. I pop it in my OLD DS and it DOES work. However I am unable to get our of the first part of the game. Something is supposed to happen when you talk to a specific character but instead nothing happens here. This is a Nintendo anti-piracy measure I learn. I far prefer the 3DS method of just giving you an error message right off the bat.
Anyway long story short I take it back today to the store to get a refund. They have never come across anything like this before but when I show them the proof they can't deny it. Trouble is I don't have my receipt and they can't look up the sale easily, shitty POS system. I have to look at my mastercard record to find the date of the transaction and finally they are able to find it and refund the money.
Lesson learned ALWAYS keep the motherfucking receipt until you have verified that everything is ok, the possibility of a fake never even crossed my mind.
Now off to Ebay to find a legit copy of the game for $5-10 more
