Taking up boxing?

Not at a gym, but just something to do at home. I figure I could build up some cardio and get regular exercise by beating on a bag every day.

I have no price range in mind, but the cheaper the better. I'm not looking for a speedbag, yet, just a regular bag.

No gloves needed; I'd prefer to bare-fist it.

Kiss your wrists goodbye.

I don't really know what the gloves do for your hands. I was under the impression it was to reduce the pain in your fists. Is it to help your wrists with the impact?

hitting a real tough bag is almost like throwing a punch at a wall. Your hands and wrists will sure have a fun time with that impact.

I'd start with a couple of hours of instruction
It's worth to go to the boxing gym for a while and spend money on that rather than on medical bills later on.

They'll teach you correct stance and proper punching technique. You still can pretty much hurt yourself if you don't know how to punch properly.
Get some good shoes as well (light and good for prancing around).

They are right about hurting your wrist, I got my first heavy bag a few years ago without knowing anything about using it or keeping my wrist tight. First few punches I threw at it caused my wrists to hurt BAD.

I just did the same thing....take it from me, you want good bag gloves AND hand wraps. Hand wraps are like 4 bucks a pair and VERY worth it unless you want to scuff all the skin off your knuckles.

So I bought a used 70lb heavy bag for $30...then proceed to take out some stuffing and put in my own sand bags, now it is a 85lb heavy bag.

Great Cheap gloves and wraps right Here --

Top Contender 12oz Super Bag Gloves - On sale for $25 - best deal out right now

I recommend Mexican Style handwraps, they have a little elasticity - $4.49 per pair is also a great deal

:\ the skin on your knuckles will be gone after the first 5 minutes, if that. Unless you cant throw a punch hard enough to break your skin 😛

As someone whose best friend trains MMA professionally, and have several others in the sports, has his own private boxing gym, boxed for over a year, and hangs around with boxers and the people who train boxers, my first peice of advice, is to look elsewhere for advice.

i have a speedbag and gloves. great cardio, bicep/tricep workout, and stress relief for me.

I might look into a speed bag enventually too. I only have a heavy bag for now. THe first day I did it, I tried 3 minute rounds with a 1 minute break. I lasted about 4 rounds and was dripping with sweat (mind you it was about 60 degrees in my garage too). The next time I went 2 minute rounds with 45 second break and made it about 6 rounds. The heavy bag has been a great workout so far and I look forward to doing it. Plus I got a jump rope for warm up and cool down....speed bag does look fun too.

as the others have said, you can do serious damage to your hands, fingers, wrists, elbow, back, and even shoulders if you do not know how to properly punch. You wouldn't do deadlifts without instruction at least once right?

Its important to have proper training, and gear. Personally I perfer to use these http://www.combatsports.com/detail_Gelshock.aspx?ID=22395 becuase I like the feel. It doesnt make you tough to not wear gloves. At least wear handwraps if you wont wear gloves. Just to stablize your wrist and help spread the impact. Thats what gloves are about, its about dispursing the impact to protect the puncher. If you punch wrong and dont wear any protection you could end up like a lot of my boxing buddys with deformend nuckles, arthritis, and other fun hand problems. I've seen guys throw improper hooks and hurt their elbow. I've even seen guys throw out there back because they think bag work is just slamming your hands with all your body weight behind it into the bag. Remember its not skin you have to worry about, or pain. You have to worry about bones, joints and nerves. Those are things that can become messed up for good.

In any case, just listen to the advice and go to a boxing gym for a little while (or a MMA gym). After you have the basics down and feel comfortable then buy a nice heavy bag and what ever protection you feel comfortable with. I'd suspect though that you will like the gym and keep going. Boxing is a great work out, I think it is one of the greatest workouts you can get. But you have to know what you are doing.

..what ever happened to Marvin Haggler?? Gawd he was a good boxer. And had that ripped killer appearance. He wa also a good sportscaster as well. Saw him ringside analyzing fights.

Boxed for the first time today.

Went to a friends house; he trains at a gym and has his own equipment at home. Another friend was there too, so he asks me to box with him. I figure, hey, why not? So we start and I feel like I'm doing pretty good. I take a few hits and make a few connections, he gives up. I was amazed; I never boxed before but he does all the time and I "won".

So, the guy who's house it was decides he'd like to box me, so he tells me to keep the gloves on. We start going, this fscker is fast. He's moving all over the place, I'm just ducking an swinging, I went down and he hit me right on the top of my head. I was pretty pissed about that, so I stood up and hit him right in the face. He gave up too!

Boxing is fun. 🙂

Boxing is the only sport I've enjoyed and I'm planning to do golden gloves next February. But if you really want to box, I do suggest go to a boxing gym. Most places offer the first class for free so you might want to check a few places before you decide on one. Try to find a place that will teach you the fundamentals - some places will just put in the ring and you "box" which can be fun but, you will be lacking the fundamentals.

As for equipment, the gym I train at, has gloves but if you want to get serious then here are some things that you will definately need:

Early Stage:
- Boxing shoes (wrestling shoes will work too)
- Mouth piece
- Handwraps
- Gloves (unless the gym provides it)

Later:
- Head guard (" ")
- Delta guard (unless you don't want children)

It's a great cardio work out and if you do it right, you'll notice your arms and bicep get really cut ... you'll also notice your punching power increase 😀

Haggler retired shortly after the fight with Sugar Ray Leonard, but he was inducted to the boxing hall of fame.

Knuckle push-ups are good for strengthening the wrists, as well as training yourself to keep them straight when punching.
