I have something that used to be a gateway notebook, which is now just the motherboard screwed onto a piece of wood and is used as network storage and music server. There is about 12mm (1/2 inch) space between the wood and motherboard. The CPU and fan is on the outside.
I was wondering if I can just remove the fan and cooling sink? Would a 1.3Ghz Celeron need cooling even if it is not enclosed?
Thanks!

Most likely, that Celeron is going to need active cooling still. Even if its the most ULV laptop variant available. What are its current temperatures?

dont mess with it. the cooling solution that shipped in the notebook is already the bare minimum it needs for it to work.

I agree, def do not take off the HSF. Or your temps will sky rocket and cpu will die.

The fan shouldn't bother you, shouldn't be that loud. keep it on. thx
