Taking suggestions for new heatsink and fan combo

Hey all!

As you can see by my last thread, my Volcano 9 isn't doing what I want it to. I'm taking some suggestions for a new HS/Fan combo. I'm looking for as much cooling as I can get without the noise being a huge issue.

I'm not looking for the quietest and the coolest, just a great duo that will make me happy and allow me to see what my EPoX 8RDA+ can do :)

So, bring it on!! :)

Well I had trouble getting the fan control to work, but I realized it doesn't work with the heat sensor connected, so I took it off and it works now. I just want something that will cool well without the noise.

I just upgraded from a P4 and it was pretty quiet. I wouldn't mind getting a HS/Fan that's just as quiet, but still provide sufficient cooling.

Have you done any overclocking?

SLK-800, 900 or SK-7 imho.

Panaflos seem cool. But I'm using thermalright's smartfan 2. Works pretty well for me. 1800+ o/ced to 2.0ghz, case temp 28c, cpu 38 idle, 42 load :)

Well the "FM" didn't say whether or not I could use both functions together. 3-in-1 usually means it can do them all, right?

Also, the "FM" seems to indicate that you jumper the sensor wire when you use the knob control. In actuality, that makes it run full speed all the time.

So it's not always reading the "FM" that's the problem...sometimes it's not written in "F" English, or it's just "F" incorrect.

I'm thinking about purchasing the volcano 9 right now since I can get it for $17 shipped, should I not get that? I just need a cheap hs/f to hold me over till me water cooling set up is done.

I think it's a good choice for $17. It's just not a QUIET choice (once again, unless you turn the rpm's way down to an ineffective level.)

I keep mine running at about 4000 rpm's (or put another way, just one level below "intolerably loud")

:)

Personally I'd go with the Vantec Aeroflow. I just love the thing. Take a look at overclockers.com heatsink rankings. It performs very well and is quiet. The clip design is awesome, the unit itself is awesome.

There are no real cons about this unit. Its priced around the $28.00 range.

Well now that I've tamed my Volcano 9, it seems to be good for me. I'd recommend it if you need something simple. It cools pretty well, and with CPUIdle, I'm running the motherboard around 28-30 idle, cpu around 35-38 idle and the fan's running around 3400-3500 RPM. I'm happy now that I've figured out how to configure it, despite the "FM" being nothing more than piece of paper that isn't clear on the product it's telling you how to use.
