OK, I've heard it recommended both ways numerous times, and its time to get to the bottom of this age old debate.

Should I take protein (protein shake, eat a steak etc...) BEFORE or AFTER I lift weights?

try both. experiment. there are variations from person to person. you may need to do both just to break
routines.

try exercising with your blood sugar levels low. try exercising with your blood sugar levels high, etc.

After for sure. You should eat something (possibly another protein shake?) probably an hour before you workout to give you energy. I usually have a banana and a protein shake an hour before i work out. And a protein shake after as well (on days that I workout).

I was told that you need to take it afterwards because protein helps to rebuild the muscles that you "tore" during your workout.

Take the shake immediately after your workout. That is when the muscles need it the most.
