Taking on linux...

well, I've already took on linux, but this time hopefully it's successful 🙂

Paulsonator.com's server is going to be turned into linux, and then I'm going to co-locate at my isp's building, so my server wont be going through a bandwidth manager or the main server, it will be hooked straight up to the t-1 and backbone 🙂

Cool huh? 🙂

Please let me marvel at myself.

Hey I seen how you got all this webpage and file hosting stuff not to mention the cost of the equipment and connecting for it and the time put in. If there's not advertising, how do you make money to at least pay off expenses?

Well first off, my server is a p200 w/88 megs of ram, so there's no cost to me there...

I have a 40 gig hard drive, and all my total files take up about 500 megs, so I have a lotta space there for users.

Also, I work for my isp. While paulsonator.com is slow right now (lol, guess free isn't always that great) it's going to be moved to my isp's building where I can hook up to a full t-1, and I still wont have to pay, because I help maintain their website and do a variety of other things for them, not to mention they WANT me to move my server up there, to get it out of the user base, because I'm a bandwidth hog... 🙂

So, with it being hooked up to the t-1 directly, it will be faster...

About the free part? Well, here's the thing. It's not totally free. I'm going to have advertising on the main site once it gets going. But on users webpages, I'm not going to have any advertising placed, because I know everyone hates advertising anyways.

For me? Well I'm going to develop something so I can "easily" update every webpage on the site, and rather quickly.

What distro and version are you running.

My advice...turn off all unnecessary services, install all security updates, and get some additional software on it to help with the monitoring (ie: you need at least portsentry and tripwire). And of course to be sure to configure the built in firewall 🙂

Right now I have to use RedHat 7.0 because that's all I have...

But I'm getting redhat 7.2

I would use mandrake, but my ata controller isn't compatible with it 🙁

By all means switch, redhat 7.0 was soooooo bad. I'd also recommend with 7.2 you run the ext3 file system. Its quite sweet, and I like it much better than the resier fs.

Patch it, turn off services, and install portsentry and tripwire 🙂

I'm downloading as we speak... (redhat 7.2)

Thanks for all the info 🙂

I wont be turning it loose anytime before I know it's all patched up and running securly!

Yea!!! Another Linux user!! 🙂 I use Solaris 8 on my Dad's Sun computer........it is just like Linux and Unix but different GUI.
