I dunno why I'm nervous, all the practice tests I've found are a piece of cake, but I guess it can't hurt to ask around here. Anything to remember, hints, tips, etc?

Also, with a learner's permit (you can only drive if a licensed driver over 18 is in the car), is it valid in other states, or just the state you get it in (in my case, NY)?

Nah, I live in NYC, in Queens. I'm going to the DMV down near Jamaica Avenue...it's a sh!t neighborhood, but I know it well because I go there sometimes. Hmm, I haven't been there in a while, I hope it's still there...

Look over at what different shape of signs mean. Ex. a rail-road sign is round, etc.

I had one of a blank round sign that said "What kind of sign is this."

Anyways, the test really is a joke, I can't believe that people actually fail it.

Yea, they always have it in sh1t neighborhoods. It'll be pretty easy and it's just a rehash of the questions they ask at the end of the chapter in the NYS Driving Manual. It's all common sense. My brother and I both scored 100%.

You can get your licence @ age 17 if you take driving school. They sometime hand out Junior Operter licenses at age 16 but with more restrictions.

I've got the manual, read thru it a few times a few months ago, but haven't done so recently. Gonna give it a good read-thru tonight, memorize the questions at the ends of the chapters, and more importantly, their answers. I've heard I should go early in the morning so that the lines will be short, any truth to that rumor?

You people have been quite helpful already, but please keep posting, I'll give this thread a few more glances, tonight and before I leave in the morning, and of cource keep you informed of the results.

Yes, New York is a pain in the ass. Make sure you have all your ID in place. They want "6 points" but always have more. A passport is probably the best form of ID. Also bring your social secuity card, school ID w/ transcript, credit card, and any other picture ID. Be nice no matter how rude some of those people act. Remember they have your testicles is a sling.

The test will be 20 questions selected at random but they are all similar to what is in the book. There will probably be a couple where you have to ID signs. I think the minimum passing grade is 65% so there is alot of leeway.

what the...?

in illinois you get a permit when you are 15, all you have to do is show up for driver's ed, which requires no driving whatsoever. at my old high school, we had driver's ed instead of PE for a semester. DE is a complete indoor class. after you pass DE you go to Range which involves driving around in circles. after you do this for about 6 saturdays, you go to 3 traffic dates. the first 2 are just driving around outside of the "range" in real traffic...whatever traffic there is at 7 AM on a saturday. the last traffic is your "test." you basically drive normally like your first 2 traffics but this is it. after this, they average your DE and range/traffic grade. if you get at least a c you pass, which means you get a slip of paper to take to the secretary of state, they take your picture and you have a license in about 5 minutes after you get the slip of paper in the mail. i laugh at the crappy driving requirements in Illinois. its a joke if you are a high school student. its actually harder if you have to go to the testing faciltiy.

Sheesh, I barely passed the Vermont permit test. I got 16 out of 20, the minimum to pass. I don't know what was wrong with me, I guess I should've read the book more.
BTW: Anyone know the difference in insurance costs between a driver who took drivers ed and one who didn't?

For me that one extra year meant the difference between $2,300 or $4,000 after I moved to Taxichusetts.

Just played some NFS4 and picked up some handy pointers.

What to do if a cop turns on his siren:
Do NOT pull over. He will arrest you if you do. Instead accelerate as quickly as possible, and evade him at all costs.

What to do when a driver attempts to pass you:
Slow down slightly, and when his car is directly next to yours, bump him off the road.

What to do when the driver behind you flashes his brights at you:
Wait until you are on a narrow, one lane road, and quickly stop the car, blocking off the road.

I can't wait to take my test tomorrow. I'm gonna ace it :)
