Myself and 3 mates are travelling to London (UK, about 60 miles away from here, Colchester) on Friday, and I would love to be able to share some tips/advice with them! :)

So, from those who have taken it (recently would be a plus, but not imperitive!), what sorta things can we expect, and what tips do you have for what/how to revise!

Also, can you confirm what the pass percentage is! On the Sybex CD that we have it says 75%, but we've been told loads of other places it's 85%, so which is it!?

Many many thanks in advance

Recently, it has been ~800 of 1000 (roughly 80%).

How they arrive at 1000 is a mystery to me.

Questions about Multicast address mapping (L3-L2), MLSP ("IP RP ....."), UTP (switch->switch=crossover, switch-->router=straight through, etc), elements relating to the OSI seven-layer model (drag & drop features associated with the layers, like L3 is packets, routers...L2 is frames, bridges/switches...L4 is segments, ports), spanning tree, VLANs, etc.

If you review the criteria on the Cisco site, that has most of what will or can be tested.

Good Luck

<I took it a few months ago, passing score was 849/1000. >

A friend of mine took it recently and the passing score is still 849/1000. Be prepared for their new simulation items. Apparently, you have to actually perform tasks on a router simulator, similar to the one they use in their official classes. If you have experience with routers, then you should have no problem with that portion of the exam. Know bridging and switching concepts very well. Know the different routing protocols, such as RIP , IGRP and OSPF. Know how to configure access lists.

Not to scare you, but of all the exams that I have taken, the CCNA is by far the most difficult single exam that I have taken. However, if you know your stuff, then you should do fine. My advice, study, study, study! Good luck!

Congrats to those who have passed recently :)

Welcome to Anandtech forums aryan :)

So it seems that the pass mark is 849 out of 1000!

I am currently very nervous about it, but hopefully if i can continue to just sit down and get loads of revision done, then i should be ok!

You will all be one of the first people to know! :)

When you call sylvan prometric about booking an exam they have a recording about the new exam, it says there is are practice questions of the new type on their site, not sure of the exact url though. I tried a one of the simulator questions the other day on the web and it wasn't bad at all if you have actually worked with the routers, i.e. addressing 2 interfaces, adding rip, etc... But you should check it out before taking the actual test to get familiar with the way the format works.

Hi all,

I am one of the guys going with Confused to london on Friday.

Thanks for some of the tips. Has anyone got any idea what to expect for the router simulator(s)? Also would anyone happen to know the URL to the practice questions Daniel mentioned about prometric?

Thanks for the advice :)

Hey all thought i'd pop this up.

We took the final today (four of us) after a week non-stop cramming to remember everything learnt over 2 years.

Bad news is only one person passed.

We had a pass mark of 849. One person got 888, another in the 600's, one was 846!! and I got 819. All in all very disappointing. I can only hope that I can pass it next time, I am hoping to book another test for next week. I suppose it didn't help that I locked myself out the router when doing my lab

2 of 9 passed at a high school some friends of mine go to. I soon will be taking it. I am screwed. I wish I could take the test again when I have time to study for it, but its $125 over here, school pays for the first round, and for the price to try again, I could buy something useful, like save it for food for college.

Actually, One question to people -

What do you think the "Cisco & Network Basics" section of the exam covers? This is the section I by far did the worst in, and no doubt this is my weakest area.

I am thinking that it covers the practical labs that are in the exam?

I was thinking about getting my CCNA, but decided against it... I am enrolled in the 4th semester of Cisco's netacad, and HATE IT. I had a really cool teacher for 1&2, but 3&4 have done nothing but suck so far...

I got my CCNA fairly recently (978) and thought I could give you some helpful hints...

Get to really know the networking basics like OSI/DOD Models, IP adressing, LAN protocols & basic IOS commands.
Also, focus on routing... Theory (Link State vs. Distance Vector), Troubleshooting (like how to prevent routing loops - very important!) as well as IOS config commands. Switching and WAN questions will also abound.

-This is a really great study site. I used it along with other to recap before the exam. They also have a very concise study guide you can print off.

Best of luck! :)

I'm considering taking the CCNA and would like some pointers as to the reading involved. Many years ago I got the CNA and it wasn't too difficult with the type of testing, but I haven't done anything else since then.

Can I get some pointers for reading material, testing material, etc? I have all the time in the world to learn how to muck with Cisco and its IOS, so any tips would be appreciated.

After that, its off to the MCSE.
