Taking apart my Toshiba A15.. and all of a sudden...

So I decided to take my brand new laptop apart, just for kicks, and also because I wanted to remove the modem in there (as a means of internet self control).

So the good news was that the modem was just a stupid dinky little card that plugs out, and I removed that,
But the bad news is... while I was removing that I lost one of the tiny screws somewhere in my laptop!

So I shook for awhile and it just seemed like the thing wouldnt come out, I could hear the screw moving around inside. I decided it would probably be a good idea just to take the whole thing apart at this time (for the fun of it, and to get the dang screw out)

Well.. as it turns out, it LOOKS like you can take your toshiba all the way apart, but truthfully, you can't! There's a stupid spot in the middle where it's stuck down and there is no screw there, I don't know what's holding it. Anyways, I took every other screw off, and then began shaking the thing around again...
and i noticed something:
This time, I couldnt hear the screw shaking around anymore.

Which means either one of two things happened:

1) the screw somehow could have fallen out while I was tinkering with the laptop (Unfortunately I have about the worst carpet possible for finding tiny screws, I already searched pretty hard)
or..
2) the screw must have gotten wedged around inside, in a certain way that it is not moving now.

again.. I've shaken this thing harder and harder, and still no sound.

do you think the screw is still stuck in there?
If it is.. what is the worst that could happen with it in there? could it cause an electrical short, or anything?

Oh and btw, I turned my laptop on after I screwed it all together, and everything seems to be working fine, and the
modem is no longer detected :) Although I had the price of the missing screw to pay. And it will drive me insane forever, not knowing if it's in there or not, or thinking about what it could possibly do, if it is in there.

You better get yourself into therapy stat!

Hope you find your screw. I don't know what else to tell you other than you're pretty lucky you didn't fry your laptop yet with that piece of metal stuck in there!

Maybe call a laptop service center and tell them your story and see what they say about it. Or if you have any friend who has experience servicing laptops can give you some suggestions.

If that screw comes loose again while you happen to have your laptop powered - I don't know what could happen but it can't be all that good.

Check the 'Net for Toshiba laptop forums and see what they say. They may have some info or schematics on how to get your lappy all the way disassembled without wrecking it.

Good luck.

I agree, you should find the screw otherwise you might get a short circut. Also, why did you have to take out screws to remove a MiniPCI modem?

I should think that loose screw will drive you crazy, I know it would me. Seems like a short just waitin to happin. before I powered up I'd prolly shake it a bit to make sure it was still held tight somewhere. If loose again i'd prolly break her back apart to get it out. Could you use vacuum/suction to get it? Or a probe with adhesive on the end to capture it? Good Luck

Please remember that when I shake this thing now I do not hear any noise. That means that the screw could either be in the laptop or it might have fallen out.

My goal is to take this apart so I can figure out if it's in there or not. But taking this thing apart will be a trick

Never mind folks, no need to worry. :)

As it turns out the keyboard on top can pop out, and that allowed me to get to the last screws so I was able to disassemble the laptop entirely.

Funny, the missing screw was stuck to a piece of tape that was holding some wires down. i took out the screw, put the laptop back together and now everything is normal. :)
