Okay this is what he's told me so far:
The Arlington is great. It's the hotel where Lucky Luciano used to stay during Prohibition. You can get a spa package for a reasonable price, too. That includes a very involved mineral bath/steam treatment and a massage. The hotel is in the middle of downtown, so restaurants, nightclubs, and the national park with the actual thermal springs are all within walking distance.
As far as other things to do in Hot Springs, I enjoy going to Oaklawn to bet on the ponies. They have live racing during the spring, simulcast racing during the off-season. Also, Magic Springs is fun if you want to ride roller coasters, etc.
So, there's that. I've asked him for more details on shopping. Stay tuned.
Well, I'm not really a shopper by nature. But I do remember that the same neighborhood the Arlington is in has several shops. They mainly sell curios and jewelry (some rather high-end), but there are a few clothing sellers as well.
There is also a mall which is about 15 minutes away from the Arlington (by car), if that is a requirement.
