I spent a week convincing my M.S. adviser that the instrument we were using was busted and the results we were getting were bogus.

In other grad work I spent several days tracking down a software glitch in the hyper-expensive measure-o-meter that precluded any data generated by the proby-thingy from ever influencing the high precision results being shown on the screen. The stellar results being shown on the computer were essentially drift in the proby-thingy's temperature compensation circuitry.

Undergrad physics lab was an endless parade of broken instruments.
