Hello, world (take deux) --
I guess my previous call for help was a wee bit too long and on the rambling side for anyone to understand what I was asking. Mea culpa! So, in a much more condensed version, here is what I should have asked:
I have repeatedly read that the Clawhammer should, in theory, let people use their existing DDR memory, from PC2100 up to PC3200. I have read again and again postings from people using a configuration similar to mine without problems, i.e.: ASUS K8N (socket 754) + Clawhammer (steppings C0 & CG) + PC3200 DDR, even generic one (the memory).
My problem is that I cannot get my K8N (and a K8N-E) motherboard to boot with this mobile A64 Clawhammer (AMA3200BEX5AR). It will run happily in the BIOS, but after detecting various peripherals, it just hangs there, not even bringing up the "BIOS status screen" you see during the normal boot sequence (where it lists the bits of configuration in a nice layout). The boot devices are not even touched (floppy, DVD, HDs). And, what initially made me think I had a fried mobo, the machine will hang when pressing the reset button.
BUT.
When I have a Sempron 2800 Palermo installed, the machine will complete the boot sequence and run happily, thank you very much. The reset button even works (i.e., the machine does not hang)! I did not change the RAM or anything else.
So the question is (again), what is happening, here? Why is my Clawhammer AMA3200BEX5AR apparently not liking the RAM I have, when the Sempron is perfectly happy with it? Why are others running PC3200 DDR RAM without a hitch, when I cannot? Or did they lie and are/were using "special" DDR sticks to make it work with a Clawhammer?
I am at my wits' end, here, so any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers.
