Take boot drive from RAID to AHCI?

Hi Folks,

I am retiring/ re-purposing my RAID drives and replacing them with a single SSD.

Can I simply clone the data on the (boot) RAID onto the single drive and change the mode to AHCI and he'll boot up?

I am using UEFI boot. I would like to save those 2-3 sec. and not load the RAID ROM, hence I intent to switch to AHCI.

My initial guess is no since RAID essentially splits the data between the multiple drives. That being said, even if it is possible you shouldn't do that because OS settings for SSD's are different that hard drives. IE..prefetch, defragmenting, cache settings, alignment. It's best to do a fresh install on your SSD.

Coming from RAID 1? Kind of, but you won't be able to avoid using RAID. Any other RAID mode: not even worth trying, especially if you're trying to save boot time, for which a fresh OS install will help.

Thanks.

No, I don't want to break the RAID. I will be replacing it. The data will be written 1-to-1 onto a single, new drive.

The question is; will the single SSD boot or will the boot loader say that he cannot find the OS?

I'm pretty sure it's not going to find an OS even though it's there. Guess you can always try though. If it works, post back.
