Every week I gather and post the best TY CDR deals onto my website (not a hot-deals site), so I figured I'd also post them here JFTHOI. If I'm missing any, please feel free to clue me in. Note this is TY discs only - with all the great deals lately, I personally don't even bother with Taiwan discs.

I hear you. I have a fickle Car CD player, and only use TY discs now, so I"m always looking for good TY deals. Ditto on posting link to your site, or PM me plz.

Why not 110% Pricematch OM before rebate price of $20 to CC before rebate price of $30. Out the door price will be $19.00 and get paid $1.00 after rebate.

Yeah..I try to get the TY most of the time. It's sometimes 50/50, but I don't really care. As long as it's TDK, I'm good.

For those wh don't know, TY stands for Taiyo Yuden Company Limited which makes highest quality reasonably priced CDRs. We presume you mean Made in Japan TY TDKs, right? Zclyh3, would much appreciate link to source listing facts regarding why TDK TYs are better than Sony TY. (I thought I read somewhere that tests showed Sony being ahead of Fuji TYs and way ahead of TDK TYs, that's why I'm asking.)

Another question, for anyone who knows, aren't all TY discs exactly the same, just the label (Sony, Fuji, etc.) being diiferent?

Since it looks like there are some newbies to the CDR posts here, a bit of info gathered here (and elsewhere) over time.

* * * BRANDS USING TY * * *
For a while, FujiFilm has been the most popular brand and are just about "guaranteed" to be made by TY. Other discs that may or may not be (depending on your luck): Sony, HP, TDK, and Memorex. Recently I've heard rumors of people finding Imation and Maxell made by TY, but so far I've found none.

* * * IDENTIFYING TY DISCS * * *
Read the label on the spindle - if it says "Made in Japan", it's probably TY. Since you might need to look through a bunch of spindles to find the good ones, you can more quickly identify the TY spindles by their distinctive screw-on knob on the top (FujiFilm uses an off-white color, most others are black).

As for TDK and Memorex, if it says "Made in Taiwan" they're most likely made by CMC or Ritek.. which from my experience are equally unreliable.

Just went and got the TY dics at Best Buy.
Be aware that I found all the discs marked as 40X were NOT TY's.
I had to look in the back of the rack for the 32X discs(same SKU) and they were
in fact TY's. I opted for the known quality vs. the stated speed.

Taiyo Yuden is the manufacturer, not the brand name you'll see in stores... although I've seen unbranded Taiyo Yudens being sold on the web as well.

As for speed, I've never known the labeled speeds on TY discs to matter a lick. When burner speeds rise, sometimes stores just slap a new sticker over the old speed listed on the spindles. All the FujiFilm I have here are listed as 24x on the spindle, but record just fine at 40x.

I've probably burned 1000+ TY discs over the past year, and I've never once burned a coaster. More importantly, the data on the burnt discs doesn't degrade like on CMC and Ritek media.. I can only think of two occassions where the data couldn't be read from TY discs, and both times it was at the end of a full disc and was remedied by using a slower reader.

Thank you. I successfully PM'ed at CC using OM ad printout. Those Memorex CD-Rs made in Japan are 100 Taiyo Yuden CD-Rs. It is confirmed using Nero InfoTool.

My take on this is that while TY discs may be good. I have found other brands (not made in japan) to be equally as good.
My maxell discs are Ritek and they are labeled at 12x. I burn them at 48x easily. I think that TY as being the best is a myth and there are other brands that work equally or not better. The only cdrs that you need be wary of are the ones that have no warranty information on them. One brand i would stay away from is Khypermedia. Those discs are so poorly manufactured that the labels on my discs are already peeling off.

its not about burn speed alone, its about the overall quality of the cd. I know my TY's will not degrade as much compared to other cd's.

To each his own, I suppose. I do extensive CD trading and have found reading CMC and Ritek media is spotty at best (corruptions in data), and they often degrade further over a relatively short period of time. This goes for brands sold in the US as well as overseas. Many others have independantly noticed this phenomenon as well, so I doubt it's a myth.

From past experience, those who've told me they had no problems with Taiwan discs aren't too concerned about corruptions - they burn it and shelve it. Again, to each his own. All I'm saying if I can get a spindle of CMC for free AR, or buy a Taiyo Yuden spindle for $5 AR, I'd gladly sacrifice the few bucks for the quality.

Hehe. Maxell happens to be one of the few brands I won't touch. I had error after error with Maxell disks in years past. Maybe the recent ones are of better quality, but I don't plan on finding out. If they were giving away free Maxell disks, I'd still have to think about it. On the other hand, all the TY spindles I've gone through have been great, so no contest as far as I'm concerned.

Kingston Hypermedia discs are made by CMC Magnetics, the most common Taiwanese manufacturer.

I got two spindles of Memorex 50-disc at Best Buy this morning, going to use two addresses as usual. I think I may have got the last two in the store, word seems to spread quick. Remember, the big knob on the top is the easiest way to seek them out, forget about the label. 100 disc spindles don't have the knob, but I think the ones with a small washer on top of the discs are always TY.

I noticed some "AT&T" labeled spindles that are made in Japan, but with no knob. Looks like there might be another company to add to the list.

This beats the Fuji deal because I only got one of the two mail-in reabates back last time I did that. There's only one mail-in rebate here.

I've never misburned a TY.. or had a player that couldn't read it.. it's worth the extra cash if any
