By a Magnitude 14 earthquake. Richter tops out at 10, doesn't it? Must be using a difference sale I guess.

(AFP) - A self-proclaimed Taiwanese "prophet" started the countdown Tuesday for what he said would be a huge earthquake, as workers moved tons of bottled water and other supplies to makeshift shelters.

"The final countdown has started," Wang Chao-hung, better known to his followers and the public as "Teacher Wang," said in the central Taiwanese town of Puli, home to about 80,000 people.

The 54 year old said a 14-magnitude killer quake would strike the island at 10:42:37 local time Wednesday, killing at least one million people.

"It will have enormous consequences for most countries around the Pacific," Wang added.

Five days later, the island, together with many parts of the Pacific, will be hit by a tsunami featuring 560-foot waves, he warned.

In expectation of the cataclysmic events, he set up a shelter in Puli, converting more than 30 cargo containers into makeshift homes and stockpiling them with enough rice, bottled water and fuel to last for several weeks.

As of late Tuesday, it was unclear whether Wang persuaded anyone to move into the containers, but the otherwise quiet town did attract dozens of journalists.

Wang advised people to stay in cargo containers, which he claimed would be safer than regular buildings after the prophesied catastrophe.

However, the prediction also prompted prosecutors to launch an investigation into an alleged fraud case.

Investigators were checking whether Wang might be cooperating with businesses in the container industry, a charge he flatly denied.

oh noes.. only 4 more hours!!

In a more serious note... I love Taiwan. I visited several times. I've been so several nations around the world, but Taiwan, by far, has the nicest and coolest people on earth. They want to get to know you, and they actively help you. Cute girls-per-square-km is on the high side, and they too, want to get to know you. :sneaky:

My coworker lost his wallet... only to have a police officer email him that someone dropped it off at a local station (his email was in his wallet) near where we were working.

I lost my iphone in a taxi once.... only to recover it the next day after I was walking around, and the taxi driver somehow recognized me walking by as he was having lunch. He ran out, and beckoned me to his car. I was thinking, "WTF? I don't need a ride right now.." He saw my confused face, and smiled, then proceeded to dig in his car and give me back my iphone (and a pen and paper that fell out of my wallet).

Great fun people, beautiful countryside, great night life (and cheap too).. I really hope nothing bad happens to Taiwan.

Oh, and my gf (along with a few of my coworkers' gf's) live there. I'm going again for two months next week. Can't wait!

Mathematically I don't think it needs to top out at 10. However, 14 is monstrously larger than the quake that hit Japan.

Dude must've wanted 30 minutes of fame this week. 15 minutes when he predicts doom, 15 minutes when doom doesn't happen.

I'm sure I'll have a dozen ATOT's correct me on this, but a 10.0 is 10x stronger than a 9.0, so a 14.0 would be 10x as strong as a 13.0 10x as strong as a 12.0 10x as strong as an 11.0 10x as strong as a 10.0. So a 14.0, pretty damn brutal.

No, I'm American! grr...
I was born in the US, but my Parents are from Korea :p. But still, I'm Meiguo damn it.

Our ships have been in and out of Taiwan for a couple years now (typhoon research, research in and around Philippines, etc.. I guess the US Navy has a huge interest in getting to know the area as best as possible)

Yeah, keep going. A 14 would be roughly 100,000 times more powerful than the earthquake that hit Japan. Think about it. Think about what would have happened if the earthquake was twice as powerful. How about 10 times as powerful? No, this nutcase is predicting 100,000 times more powerful.

How much energy is that? Just using an online energy calculator that I found, it's the equivalent of 1.508024x10^16 tons of TNT.
Tsar Bomba, the largest nuclear device ever exploded, released
57000000 tons of TNT worth of energy.
14 magnitude quake:
15000000000000000 tons of TNT
That's equivalent to nearly 265 MILLION of the most powerful nuclear devices ever exploded. I'll check in a minute, but I think that an extinction level comet colliding with the earth would involve less energy than that.

At a glance of a couple sources, it appears that an extinction level event from space would be roughly 10 million megatons TNT or 10^13 tons of TNT. This nutcase is predicting an earthquake that's 1500 times more powerful than that??!

(I'm also sure someone will correct my math if wrong.)

If I had a dime for every time some self proclaimed Psyche predicted the end of the world, I would have more money than Bill Gates.

So essentially the island of Formosa would have to explode, catch on fire, fall over, be nuked by every capable country on earth , and sink in to the ocean to equal to what this guy is claiming?

An Earthquake that large would probably crack the Earth in half. A shipping container will not solve that problem.

Wait, a magnitude 14 quake... wouldnt that be enough to split the earths crust?

edit: that big ass meteor that hit in the Yucatán was only 100 Teratons. So were looking at something 150 times that? Yeah my ass

According to Wikipedia, my bible, a 12.55 magnitude quake would be equal to the asteroid strike that killed the dinosaurs. I'm pretty sure a magnitude 14 quake is impossible without external intervention.

Better convert to Origin or the Ori will smite us.
