Please. Trump is talking trash, trying to pick up an illegitimate bargaining chip in Taiwan. They & the mainlanders have maintained the peace for 40 years under one China policy. Neither one really has proper incentive to knowingly change that.

[.

Please. The parties have kept the peace themselves under the one China policy & there's no reason to think they'll change that, regardless of American chest beating.

Why so angry?

The One China policy was in place ever since the chinas when splits in 1948.

Why can't the people of Taiwan vote whether they want independence or to be apart of China and the rest of the world support what the people of Taiwan wants?

1949, actually. The rhetoric & positions have evolved over the years but the current arrangement lets everybody do as they have & will likely continue until they come up with some mutually agreed upon alternative. The only way we'll see violence, I figure, is if the Taiwanese are conned into declaring independence. The mainlanders have forsworn violence otherwise & both sides have acted accordingly.

The Chinese probably figure that America is off on a 4 year bender & hope not to see too much of us until we sober up.

Because the rest of the world doesn't want to pick a fight with China. Also because Taiwanese cultural ambassadors suck and so no one is won over through charisma, prime example of charisma being Nelson Mandela, can you name a charismatic Taiwanese? Most people can't tell the difference between the Chinese and Taiwanese.

Pretty sure that part of their (ROC) constitution was effective '48 or before. The docs esp on the ROC side were written before definitively hopping the strait.

Probably so, but the territories solidified into what it is today when the Kuomintang fled to Taiwan in 1949. Dunno about the mainlanders, but the Taiwanese ran a lot of black ops against the mainland for decades afterwards. Nixon, Kissinger & the Chinese executed a brilliant bit of diplomacy & changed everything. It was perfectly clear that the Kuomintang would never return to the mainland & that the mainlanders couldn't take Taiwan, either. So we left them to their own devices & they've been working it out peacefully for over 40 years.

Nobody needs Donald Trump stirring the shit with a canoe paddle, but, well, he just can't seem to help himself. He'll try the world's patience, I'm sure.

This is absolutely hilarious. The ROC started this one-china business on the account that most western countries sided with them, only to regret it after the table of history turned. They're stuck in a conundrum of their own making.

It matters that their constitution claims territorial sovereignty over "existing national boundaries" prior to 49, ie. before they were relegated to the island: https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Constitution_of_the_Republic_of_China#Chapter_I._GENERAL_PROVISIONS

Notice at the very top:
  • (Adopted by the National Assembly on December 25, 1946, promulgated by the National Government on January 1, 1947, and effective from December 25, 1947.)
The US certainly abidded by one-china before nixon, he just changed which china it was with.
