Just finish watching Discovery channel.
It's awesome.

Taiwan 101

Anyone know the official site for that building?
Maybe more pics?

The world's tallest building in one of the world's most earthquake-prone countries? Could be really bad if a big one hits.

No matter what you say, it's still the tallest free standing structure, radio tower on top or not.

I was watching a show about the world's tallest skyscrapers, and they showed the Petronas Towers next to the Sears Tower. The top floor of the Sears Tower is taller than the top floor on the Petronas Towers, and again it's taller to the top of the spire than the Petronas Towers.

However, due to a technicality of the committee that rates the height buildings, the antenna on the Sears Tower does not count, while the antenna on the Petronas Towers does. This is because the original architectural plans called for an antenna to be on top of the Petronas Towers, while the original plan for the Sears Tower was without an antenna.

So to the roof, the Sears Tower is taller, and to the top of the antenna the Sears Tower is taller. But according to the rules, the official height of the Petronas Towers is measured at the tip of the antenna while the height of the Sears Towers is measured at the roof.

As a side note, the plans for the new World Trade Center calls for a building that's much shorter than the original Twin Towers. However, due to the rule technicality that I mentioned before, the spire on the new design will count as part of the building, while the antenna on the old WTC did not count towards its height. With this is mind, they are calling the new design "taller" than the old design.

About the Sears Tower, it is still widely considered the "Tallest"... it holds 3 out of 4 world's tallest titles: Tallest building including antenna; Highest roof; and Highest occupied floor. The Petronas Towers only hold a "Tallest" title based on a technicality.

Actually I was also watching a show about buildings the other day on TLC or discovery, and it was talking about how tall skyscrapers are actually less prone to damage from earthquakes, as opposed to normal buildings. Something to do with the fact that they can move and sway or something. I'm not saying an earthquake wouldn't take this thing down, but its complicated.

yup. If you ever have been in a skyscraper during a day with some slight wind, you will notice that it sways in the wind so it doesnt fully resist all that air pressure. I'm going to assume that it would also help during an earthquake, as it would be more fluid, as opposed to the rigid structure of a normal building

I think the buildings are much more rigid than everyone thinks.. I read somewhere in an engineering publication that said from top to bottom, the Sears Tower only flexes 6 inches in 100mph wind. Chicago is the windy city.

Highest occupied floor is the only real way to measure the height. Toothpicks shouldn't count. ;)

There will be taller buildings

including the new world trade center... but the tallest will be in United Arab Emirates..

with a roof taller than anyones poles

BTW.. if you were to count poles.. there used to be an antenna in Poland

that was 2117 feet tall
almost half a mile tall!

wow, cool stuff....1km/minute...that's 60km/hr...that's like what...35 miles/hour? Residential speeds going UP a building. :D

Can't wait to visit Taiwan after it's built...
