The tape that comes with the Taislo HSF's....is it good enought?
I know its no arctic silver, but I do have some pretty good thermal paste, and was just wondering if I should use the paste or stick with the tape?

Thanks

I would reccomend taking it off. Even the cheap radioshack thermal paste is probably better than the thermal tape.

dood, this really sucks.

Now I have to probably lab my HSF and get arctic silver to get the same performance when it was totally stock!!!

Freak, I speant like 1 hour applying thermal paste, reapplying it, and reapplying it just to get worse performace!!!!

How true, I think the thermal pad that comes with Taisol HSF are pretty decent. I saw no temperature change when going from thermal pad to thermal paste on my CGK733 on my 1.1 Ghz Tbird. I don't overclock so artic silver isn't really for me.

SuperKen,

The thermal pad is a phase change material that AMD recommended. Go to the AMD Tech Support site and download document 23794 for more information.

Do a search for thermal AND pad for forum posts older than 45 days and you will find a worth of information on this topic.

The bottom line is: If you oc, scrap off the thermal pad and replace it with Artic Silver. Otherwise, the thermal pad performs better than most ordinary thermal grease.

arod324, your misinformation is hurting people.

Well, I'm sorry if I raised his cpu temp by doing that. But I have had two other heatsinks, in which I took the thermal tape off, and replaced it with thermal paste. In both instances, it lowered the temp by 2-3C.

arod324,

If you use cheapo HSF that has low quality thermal pad, replacing them with thermal paste may help the heat transfer. SuperKen is talking about the Taisol here. Taisol uses AMD approved thermal interface material. You are making a recommendation without researching for the facts, which is dangereous. Did you do a search as I suggested on this topic yet?

It took me 1 hour, because first I had to scrape all the existing thermal tape off. Then I carefully took apart the case and HSF to apply the thermal paste. I turned back on the computer to find that my temps were higer! So thinking that I somehow applied the paste wrong, I did the whole process again. Tested again, and still had higher temperatures. So in anger (becuase I speant time makeing my HSF perform WORSE) I repeated the whole process again, so in the end I took apart my Case 3 times, carefully took off my HSF 3 times, carefully applied thermal paste 3 times, put the HSF back on really carefully 3 times, assemble my case 3 times, test the performance 3 times, AND look in disgust at my temp readings 3 times.

Man, now I have to speand $10 on Arctic silver to get back to the performance I was originally at.

I gave an opinion based on previous experiences with thermal tape. I guess in this case I am wrong, but I gave him my honest opinion about thermal tape. I admit that I didn't research it, because I thought it was just like all of the other paste. If it makes you feel any better, I took my thermal tape off also without even bothering to research.
Sorry about giving you the wrong information SuperKen!. I thought that the thermal tape was worse.

I've been using my Taisol for 2 weeks now/whn i got it i used the tape 'cause it looked diff from other frag tape I've seen before/so i tried to desense the sticky of it and slapped her on/then removed and lapped to mirror and applied silver/the Silver yielded the better in my case/not all systems are the same/do what works for you. Nuff said

Check out the following thread:

Theremite's correct: if you're overclocking, or you plan to remove the heatsink at all in the future, the AS is a better choice. On the other hand, if you plan to run your chip at its rated speed, and plan to leave the Taisol attached until your next CPU upgrade, the thermal tape will suffice.

BTW, the AS should give you better performance than the original thermal tape. Be sure to follow the installation instructions found at:

im using the thermal interface material while overclocking, runs fine for me duron @ 1ghz. surely arctic silver would be better, but that would require an unecessary 8 dollar investment. :p

I'm very impressed with this little pad.
