I just replaced the stock HS that came with my boxed 1.2GHz Thunderbird. Though the Taisol is a *bit* quieter, I was surprised that there wasn't much difference...
I was even using the evil thermal pad (chewing gum?) that came with the AMD HS... I gently removed the same from the Taisol and installed it with (non-metallic) silicon grease. I was careful to use as thin a layer as possible, and feel I did a good job installing.
Anyway, my system went from 35C to 34C idle, and 52C to 50C loaded (MSI K7 Master motherboard, not overclocking).
What would lapping and Artic Silver buy me in terms of further drops? My temps are fine, I think, but I would *like* to lower the fan RPM a bit for noise control (will a variable resistor from Radio Shack do the trick?), and so I'd like to optimize the other variables.
