thanks Mike. Will the TaiSol CGK742092 perform better than a alpha 6035 using thermal pad??

I'd say that, using arctic silver, the taisol would be slightly better, and using a thermal pad, they'd probably be about the same.

If both of them used a thermal pad, yes.

If the CGK742092 used Arctic Silver, yes.

If both of them used Arctic Silver, yes.

If the PAL6035 had properly applied Arctic Silver, it would probably beat the CGK742 by a few Cs.

I just recieved this cooler and some arctic silver. The bottom of the heatsink has a few scratches and marks. Does this make any difference in cooling? Is there any way to sand them down or something? With what? Thanks

I s'pose you could lap it. This could take hours if you're a perfectionist. I don't know much about the process.

Well to answer my own questions the TaiSol CGK742092 beats the Alpha in performace on my system. I bumped my Duron up to 1GHz was running it at 800 MHz with alpha and I also raised Vcore from 1.5 to 1.7.5 and Im getting same temps at higher MHZ and higher Vcore big difference this heatsink is very good. 36 C idle 40 C full load at 1 GHZ not bad at all for a $20 heatsink using thermal pad LOL

Mike I have read some other threads with you saying to burn in thermal pad at 58 C?? that kind of temp really scares me that seems very risky if you ask me.

58c is not a problem, just be careful. TBIRDS/Durons can handle 85-90 before they go belly up. (this doesn't mean that they will run at this temp). 58c is the change temp for Chomerics T-725. Course, now we get into how you read and the temp difference from the in-socket thermistor. If you are nervous, disconnect the fan and let the temp reach say 52. Most thermistors read at least 6c off from the core, many as much as 10c.

Another option is to disconnect power from the mobo and heat up the hsf with a hair-drier, not as good as the first option.

The pad offers a bit of extra 'cushion' for the delicate chip.

Does anybody use the SEARCH function anymore?

This question has been asked dozens of times before in the last few weeks alone.

DaddyG i tried this last night I unpluged power to fans and temp still would not go higher than 41C I had to run some heavy apps to raise temps this heatsink is the best!! anyways i got it up to 50C and thats where I stopped my temp gauge is pushed down a little so i would guess i was close to 55C or more.

hey mustang, you using the via hardware monitor for those readings? cause im almost done writing up a review of my cgk where i use a compunurse (more accurate since it touches side of core), and the compunurse report about 6C HIGHER than via HM........so that 36 idle is at LEAST 41C, probably somewhere close to 50 though.......(my 600@800 1.55v is around 45idle, 48load with the compunurse readings) ;)
mikewarrior tell him about this whole VIA hm inaccuracy thing ;)

I would, but I dont' have the time rgiht now to post it all.

to look at a previous discussion, Go Here.

Maverick2002,

I'm glad you decided to try a different method. your current method is the most accurate low-cost method for an end-user to do.

I believe Nevin (operator? of www.arcticsilver.com) once stated that only the compound sold from Arctic Silver.com would be the real thing. He said that Alpha had put silver colouring into its silicone grease to make it look like AS. Probably same as yours, because to add a real tube of AS to a semi-expensive cooler like the CGK would raise the price higher.
