lets say you are a black belt in Tae Kwon Do. you got into a fight against a boxer.

What kicks do you use? How to keep him from closing distance to make your kicks still viable?

This, and the knees. If he has no protection and it's not a friendly fight go for the balls. Quick, yet effective.

If he has protection knees are fine. He is used to defending his upper body, not his lower, and if you destroy his knees he can't avoid hits/kicks to the head anymore.

Anyone who posts that kicks to the nuts is not fair has never been in a real fight. I learned quickly that there are no rules in fights. I used to know this one guy who wore steel toes every day just so that he could kick someone in the shin as his first move in a fight. I knew another guy who's first punch was always to the neck. The worst was my best friend who would do this weird pressure point thing to your thigh. It would make it so your leg would be all stupid and wouldn't work.

With the ATA belt factories in every city around my area, that is only 18 months of 2-3 2hr classes a week doing some weak ass excuse for training. You wouldn't even have to be worth a damned after that either, just $$$ up for the ridiculous number of belt test on the way=ka-ching!. I hope we are talking old world TKD here. ;)

Their no hands to the head tournaments do not exactly promote strong defense against a good hand striker either. Master Yun threw one Kung-Fu, Karate. TKD championships here, after the TKD people found out how poorly their belt rankings faired against the comp. he just held TKD championships afterward. The whole scenario is silly anyways, if it is a straight stand-up fight, and you are that deficient in pugilistic skills, and forced to rely on kicks, and the opponents is in your weight class and a good boxer, odds are you are going to get owned. Because he/she will pass and get close enough to do work.

Anyone who posts that kicks to the nuts is not fair has never been in a real fight. Not directed at you in particular, kicking someone in the groin, that has been around the proverbial block, is extremely difficult. Thinking it is going to stop someone that is pushing all those endorphines, is a serious miscalculation.

I learned quickly that there are no rules in fights. I used to know this one guy who wore steel toes every day just so that he could kick someone in the shin as his first move in a fight. I knew another guy who's first punch was always to the neck. What the hell, is this H.S. we are talking? Hell, even then, a lot of cats, especially the brothers, knew how to tuck their chin and keep their hands up. ;) The worst was my best friend who would do this weird pressure point thing to your thigh. It would make it so your leg would be all stupid and wouldn't work. Again, try that shat on someone amped up, that knows their way around, hell of a focus strike just to land it, and still isn't going to stop many, though it can make it hard to plant on it.
My experience is that nothing really hurts much till hrs later when the endorphines subside.

Depending on your speed, most of your kicks may not be viable. A straight punch to the face is quicker than a kick so you gotta watch out. How about you grapple the boxer? He's SOL at that point :)

When I wanted a spacer, I'd feint and bike till they'd go aggressive enough to distance cover, then counter side-kick to the hip, stomach, or ribs. It usually had the desired effect of moving them backwards involuntarily.

what kind of fight? Is this a fight where you're trying to protect yourself? Or are you the aggressor? I'd be less inclined to hold back if I were the one being attacked & needed to defend myself. In that case, I'd be aiming for the "nards" or the knees. I'm pretty sure I'd only need to connect once to end it. Otherwise, front kick, side kick, back kick, all toward the center of mass. You should have enough power in your kicks to stop someone in their tracks.
Outer thighs?? I don't think that'd even slow someone.
this is one of the kicks
or this (same kick, but with a combination toward the end
Note: center of mass, not in the side. In a tournament, contact is a point, even if you fall down. In a real fight, you want to do the most damage. Joints (knee), groin, center of mass, neck, head. Thigh?? You could probably break a 2x4 over the thigh of someone with strong legs and not even slow him down.

If you watch tournament fighting, where the goal is to score points, then TKD is just a lot of fancy spinning and kicking. But, TKD also teaches self-defense techniques, and they can be quite effective.

Side kick will be your most effective...or a back kick would work..but anything like a snap kick wont work unless your doing it to keep him at bay and not to actually hit him. Though if you were a good black belt you wouldnt need to kick at all to avoid a boxer.

Lol at some responses in this thread.

Front forward kick down and fast to the shin, almost like a foot stomp but instead to the shin. Most boxers have weak legs because they train inappropriately and go for hay-makers too often, or keep their head way down too low.

Kickboxers on the other hand... well good luck. Let's just say you better watch out for those elbows than worry about those knees. Well I always got my ass handed to me anyway. :p Ow.

considering taht the punch will most likely a straight punch, i would counter with a either a front kick (if you're quick enough) of a side step, then side kick into the stomach since he's already exposed. or you could be idiotic and try a crescent kick or even spinning roundhouse and leave yourself vulnerable to a wide array of punches to the head and side. :) During my first tourney ever, my instructor told me i inadvertantly used a tornado kick for a point. he was so surprised and excited he was jumping in the air. haha. man i miss TKD. i'm definitely gonna have to try and get back into it.
