Played it on the PS1 and never really could get into it. It was like FFTactics but even more time consuming and not as good in many areas (graphics weren't as appealing, not as good music, etc).

One of my friends and his brother were really into it. They thought FFTactics was better, but they liked Tactics Ogre a lot because they got more playtime out of it (for some reason they love RPG grinding).

The graphics and sound have received very nice upgrades in this version. As well that have introduced the chariot system which allows you to undo up to the last 50 moves to go back to any point in a battle. You can do the same with the story line and go back and play different branches of the story. Love the art style here. Also the amount of customization and possible levels of micromanagement are insane, though you don't have to get into all of that. And yes I like level grinding quite a lot. I really liked fftactics as well, though I also plaid the PSP remake of that.

Yeah it looked like it received a pretty nice visual upgrade (and I believe I read that the music also was pretty improved), and those other changes sound like it'd help. Does it also have a quick-save state feature? I think that would be the biggest need for it on the PSP, so you could jump in and out of battles when you need to.

Is this available digitally? On the PSP or the PS3?

Yes it had quick save as well. And the quick save file is not deleted when you load it. I got it as a physical game. Don't know if it's available for download.

Tactics Ogre was originally released on the SNES near the end of 1995 in Japan. We never saw it here in North America until sometime in 1998, on the original Playstation. Final Fantasy Tactics was released mid 1997 in Japan. Tactics Ogre is just an older game.

I have felt that both were excessively time consuming, but once you got a ways into each they could both be really fun, despite the fact that both have some minor mechanics that can be infuriating at times. They're the peak examples of their genre at that time, so if you don't like either, you will probably hate any other strategy rpgs from back then.

I love FFTactics, in fact its my favorite Final Fantasy game. I had forgotten that Tactics Ogre was originally on the SNES (I remember seeing previews or something back in EGM or one of the gaming magazines).

Tactics Ogre just never could catch my interest, the battles dragged on and it progress seemed really slow (it was irritating going through a long battle and having little to show for it in character development). I'm sure its better once you learn easier means to do it (I know my friend leveled faster by doing the training mode and they'd spend hours in there per battle but it still was very slow going from what I could tell). Likewise the characters and classes/skills just weren't as interesting to me.
