What the HELL is everyone's obsession with flashlights? It's a FLASHLIGHT. You can't do anything cool with it, except perhaps light up a bright room or whack somebody in the head with it. Why spend so much money on a flashlight when you could get the $3.79 floating lantern special and a baseball bat at walmart? What good is it that you're going to spend all this money on it? The things that Americans will spend money on make me sick.

Good grief dude, relax! Have a prozac or something! There ARE worst things people could be spending money on....

Next time your somewhere really dark and creepy, or during an extended power outage, etc. I'll bet you will wish you had a better light than a crappy store model.....

I've got a 6v lantern that I've modified to take a rechargable 7.2v NiCad pack. It's lighter and brighter than the original, fairly rugged, and almost free to operate. It does everything I need, and I can operate it indefinately during an outage thanks to the charger that runs off of 12v.

I just don't see why someone would spend more than $20 on a flashlight unless they use it several hours per day.

Everyone has their own thing they spend $$ on.

flashlights are dope.

As I sit at on my Athlon XP 2200+ with a GeForce3 (I think) video card, I wonder why people spend so much on their computers. ;) Since I bought my first decent flashlight (Inova X5), I find I use it a heck of a lot more than I used to use a flashlight. That's pretty low-end compared to SureFires though.

Can you stick in your pocket and have it on you at anytime? I doubt it. Relax, I'm not critisizing you over your choice of flashlights. The purpose of my thread was to alert other fans of Surefires' of the impending price increase. Sheesh, so who pissed in your Cheerios?

EXACTLY. Look at people paying $500 for a video card just so they can play games.... now theres' a worthwhile expenditure!

Ok, enough of the bickering... lets just step back relax and let the SUPPORTERS of high end lights have this thread, ok?

If I was a Marine or SWAT team leader, I sure as hell wouldn't want to depend on a $3 flashlight that would probably die if I dropped it or got it wet. Surefire's products called "tactical" flashlights for a reason... they're built to military grade specifications for durability.

For Marines, great. But are you in that situation? I don't see the application of that to a normal person.

High powered lights DO have personal defense capability as well. A blast to the eyes of an aggressor at night will definetly give them pause and hurt their eyes, maybe long enough to get away or get the drop on them with some pepper spray your keys, fist whatever. If it becomes a more dire situation you can hold it in your fist and use it as an impact weapon.

Just look at this little ah heck, the E2 Defender. Now THAT would hurt if brought down on top of their skull. And yes, the price went up 6 bucks on that one as well. If you don't believe me about the brightness, go to a store that carries them or get one then flash yourself in the eyes with it, especially in the dark. Then you'll understand what appeal some of these lights have.

Keep in mind the price shown is the MSRP, you can find them a little cheaper around the net.

Surefire rocks. I have no idea why there is an increase in the battery prices. This really is not going to help the industry convince people that CR123's are the way to go.

I'll take this opportunity to highly recommend the Pelican M6 Lithium. Not just because of it's quality, but the customer service/lifetime warranty as well.

Doesnt matter much to me. I would never buy one.
My uncle got me the L7 digital. Its super neat but if I had to spend the money it would be for a Maglight.

This thread inspired me to buy a SureFire G2. I've heard good things about it. Anyone know how it compares to my Inova X5? CPF seems to be having technical difficulties.

Pelicans are great lights as well. Have you see their 3W LED version?

Ahhh, another convert! Heh, heh. Well the G2 is an incandescent so it will have a more "sun" like light color to the beam. The X5 you have is more of a flood better for closer ranges, say less than 10 feet. I'd say its about 35 lumen output. The G2 is more of a tactical light, has a tight beam pattern which will make it better at further ranges. It has 65 lumen output.

I'm curious, what color did you get and did you get extra batteries? ALso, I highly recommend a better UCL lens from Flashlightlens.com it is a tempered glass lens with anti reflective coating on both sides. Theyre 7 bucks and worth it.

No, I haven't. I have a Streamlight Twin-Task with LEDs that I use on traffic stops and other situations where I need light for long, non-tactical periods.

Thanks, I've been trying to find the output of the X5 forever. I got black and I already have ~20 CR123As. :) I'll check out those lenses though.

The 28.8mm UCL is the one I'm talking about. Nice choice by the way! Surefires' are like potato chips, you can't have just one!

I never understood this fascination with flashlights. Do you guys use them constantly? Or is it like a collector's item?

I use mine quite a bit. It's something you don't realize how useful it is until you actually have it for a while and then it becomes something you need.

It's important to get a really powerful one or you might as well stick with cheap flashlights. My Surefire Outdoorsman is rated at 60 lumens and is bright enough to blind you. :D Great for working inside a dusty old computer case. ;)

I have the new E2e and its 60 lumens as well. I love it. Nice and compact. Doesn't have as tight a beam as the P60 based lights like the G2 or 6P due to its smaller reflector but I carry it constantly.

I'm pretty sure G2's are coming with glass lenses these days. When I bought my G2 Nitrolon I ordered a new lens for it but the lens I pulled out of it was definitely glass (broke like glass when I smashed it).

While a replacement lens will likely be better, there isn't a need to replace it simply for use with the P61 lamp (my reason for replacement).

BTW for those posting about the Dorcy 3D. I picked one up the other day, it's definitely a steal for $22. Absolutely perfect light to have around the house, but comparing it to a Surefire is absurd. Even the G2 is FAR brighter than a 1W Luxeon could ever hope to be.
