Tablets?

So I just read that the new Google Nexus tablet is available and I'm thinking about picking one up. I currently have a 3 yr old laptop, and TBH, I don't use it that much. It's painfully slow to boot, runs Vista and pretty much the only thing it's used for is to stream movies from Plex MS to it for my 2 yr old.

Sooooo...Thinking about picking up one of these tablets. I'm pretty sure my wife would like an iPad more, but I don't really want to drop $500 when I *THINK* I could get similar/greater performance for cheaper. I know nothing of hardware specs for tablets ie Nvidia Tegra CPU? So I'm not sure what are good specs etc. But for $200, this could be a great mini investment.

Thoughts, suggestions?

the google tabley runs android, so if you want to run windows software, it will not work. With the ipad, it runs the same software as the mac's, if only slower.

Not quite.

Google = Android apps / Google Play store

iPad = iOS apps NOT the same thing as OS X desktop apps. You can't grab a random desktop app and run it on an iPad or iPhone.

WinRT = Microsoft tablet OS than will only run "Metro" versions of Win8 apps not any existing XP / 7 apps

Microsoft Surface = tablets in 2 versions, WinRT (see above) and real Windows 8 with both desktop and Metro apps. With Surface it's an Ultrabook style laptop with a detachable keyboard-cover to use as a tablet.

Well I went ahead and ordered the Nexus 7. I fig. for the price + the $25 in Google Play credit it seemed like a good deal and right around the price point I was looking to spend. If it's a dud, I'll see about returning it, but that won't be for a few weeks anyways so we'll see. I'm not too concerned with the tablet having the ability to run windows or mac software. I'm just looking for something that has wifi that is light and not as bulky as a laptop that generates less heat. This should fit the bill nicely.

I'm pretty excited about getting the Nexus 7. Just waiting for it to come out and ship. Although, I think for myself, I might be getting a Surface when those come out. They look pretty sweet.

Nexus 7 looks quite impressive to me too, with it's quad core Andriod 4.1 1280x800 screen all packed into 7". Good to see technology evolving! My computer usage patterns have changed a lot over the last few years, no more gaming and mostly just reading websites/forums, talking on facebook and listening to music / watching videos - I might not even need a computer at all anymore. For the low price ($200) I may pick one up as well, and maybe just chuck my laptop out the window! haha. Only thing I don't like is that it seems like you'd have to throw your mp3s/files onto the cloud or internet then download it to the Nexus instead of just using a flash drive / external storage (from what I can tell?); not a huge issue though I guess.

Surface, on the other hand, looks like it's going to be around $600-$1000 (ARM vs. x86 version). Unless you need a keyboard, windows, etc. doesn't seem worth it to me, you can just get a netbook for $200-$300 and have similar functionailty (besides the touchscreen, high-res screen), though it does look interestingly innovative.

surface tablets might replace laptops though, which would be pretty crazy. i know i wouldnt mind one to replace my laptop. im already used to external dvd rams

Yeah, looks like (the x86 version, at least) might have an Intel i5 processor and SSD included as well. That'd be nice, might put them on par with ultrabooks but slightly less pricey and easier form-factor to carry around.

nexus 7 is going in my dash as a carpc! im already planning out all the tasker commands i want to use

This would be awesome for me except I don't get free or open wifi where I live (out in the country).

On a side note, I read that Staples leaked out a possible ship date of July 12th.

Anyone have an idea of how much space will be available after all the preloaded & OS stuff with the 8gb? Just curious because I was attempting to cancel my order and switch to the 16gb but the Play rep said it was too late to actually cancel it, but recommended to refuse delivery and get a refund and purchase the 16gb that way. But he said the refund could take as long as 2wks. Just trying to decide what I should do.
