So I'm looking to buy one of these for my mom, however I don't have the slightest idea what's good to get. Anyone have suggestions for under $300?

Convection Ovens and Microwave ovens are two separate things..

Convection ovens augment a traditional oven by circulating heated air using a fan. Food warms faster in a convection oven, because the moving air strips away the thin layer of air which otherwise would surround and insulate the food.

A microwave oven heats food by dielectric heating. This is accomplished by using microwave radiation to heat polarized molecules within the food.

Yes and there are a number of ovens that do both now.

Yep...quite a few companies now make convection microwave ovens. Pretty nifty devices. You can get them as over-the counter style, tabletop/counter top styles, built-in styles, and combination with regular ranges.

Seen 'em.... haven't used it.. but i dont trust 'em without a REALLY good review.. a microwave doesn't cook the same as a regular oven... and running some hot air over microwaved food to get it "brown" isn't gonna taste the same.

I took a look over at Consumer Guide and it looks like most with a good review are around $350. I've only used high powered commercial units myself so, I can't vouch for consumer versions although Wolf makes a dandy unit if you have a spare $3500 laying around. :)

If $300 is a hard limit, check out used appliance stores. I've gotten many appliances at such stores myself and can recommend them for saving money.

couldn't tell you how much it costs, but my dad just got a Kenmore one and it's bad ass, I reheated pizza in it normal and it was crappy Microwave like. I did the convention setting and it came out uber delicious.

most pizza delivery places use a jumbo convection oven with a conveyor belt to cook their pizzas.

They are two separate functions. You can do either one.

The kenmore one comes in around $350 IIRC. You may be able to go to a sears outlet store that will carry dinged and dented ones at about a 20% markdown. Check your local store, they may have open box returns as well.
