I'm thinking about picking up an android based tablet in the next couple of months. There doesn't seem to be much availability in the stores, so wondering what are some of the better models to be looking at when sales come around.

Sounds like you need to sit down and determine what specs and capabilities you want in a tablet before you start shopping. Personally I'd want one based upon a quad core processor like a snapdragon but that's just me. I run a 10.1" windows 10 tablet with a quad core atom processor.

Tab s2. A good tab is a good tab. Doesn't matter what platform. They pretty much do all the same crap.

-In my order of personal preference; I feel 8" is the optimal size for a tablet...
1. NVIDIA SHIELD tablet K1: all around performer
2. Galaxy Tab S2 8": Small casual use tablet
3. Asus ZenPad S 8": Cheap Tablet with OK specs

I have a Lenovo Tab 2 a10-70. It's got decent specs, for the price; mediatek quad core, 2gb ram, GPS, 16gb storage and a microsd card. It's around $150, but I got mine at Walmart for $130. It's also one of the few under-$350 tablets with a 1080p IPS display.

I've tried several tablets and have opted of the iPad Air 2. It's a very nice tablet and does everything that I need it to do.

I was planning to get a K1 for my son's b-day but they are completely out of stock worldwide. I might go for a Tab S2 8.0 since I have a 9.7 already. I have a month to go, crosses fingers on Nvidia getting some production goin before then.

If cost wasn't a concern I would go with a Pixel tablet for sure. I am hoping we see some price drops at some point (typical for Android devices) so I can give my Air 2 to my daughter and pick one up.
