Tablet PC or Normal Laptop

So my old dell crapped out on me. The damn thing freezes at random times so its time for a new laptop.

I'm considering a Dell Inspiron e1505 with a lot of goodies or a Gateway Tablet PC CX2610X.

First questions first - anyone know if tablets are useful in the first place - or still a technology that is too immature.

Price difference between the two is about $300.

Secondly - the gateway says it has a 14 inch screen but doesn't say what screen res it can run at.

Third - battery life - any good on tablets - if it only goes 3 hours in a day - it defeats the purpose of using it as a paper replacement for myself. I am getting the 12 cell battery

Thanks in advance

The usefulness of a tablet is up to you. You generally sacrifice size and battery life for tablet capbilities. I used a tablet for the first time a month ago and I wasn't impressed. Being left handed the setup didn't make it ideal for scrolling & using the other functions. trying to use the stylus for text input was futile & slow, but I'm sure you get used to that. Unless you need the convenience of being able to input to a computer without using a keyboard or need the flexibility of hand-drawing things, I'd say it isn't worth it.

I think the Gateway is either WXGA or WXGA+ (1280x800 or 1440x900).

Well I am starting grad school this fall - so I was thinking to use it as a replacement for a notebook and take my course notes using it. I just called gateway and they said that its a WXGA screen - which is too small for my taste. Any other good tablets with a higher screen res

Ideas?

For classroom note taking, I would use a PDA, and then have a high res laptop in my room so I could transfer the PDA notes to the laptop.

Trying to take notes on a keyboard in a classroom is really counterproductive unless you arge a speedy touch typist. You spend so much time screwing around with the computer that you miss the prof's body language and commentary nuances that may prove important later on an exam.

The main thing is to listen and concetrate on what is said - and quick notes on a PDA can enhance that process.

Well that is the whole reason I was thinking of tablet pc - the ability to take handwritten notes that I know will be centralized. I have a pda but to be honest - writing on a small screen for notes is just impractical. I'll keep looking - my budget caps out at $1800

While you are looking - Lenovo has just announced release of a new tablet PC.
