Tablet Laptop's...

I dont' know why tablet pc's are getting so popular. IBM released a new Tablet PC called the X41.

CAn anybody explain what the benefits are other than being able to write on them?

LIke if you wanted, could what you have written by hand be automatically translated into the actual TEXT characters?

I'm pretty sure that it can translate to text, and it's nice to be able to stand and write stuff down, as you can't do that with a regular keyboard.

A 6x9 one would be perfect for ebooks (and data pads like you've seen on sci fi shows)

The big deal is that the screen is detached, you can hold it like a clipboard, read it like a magazine, jot notes or draw like on paper.

Unfortunately they're still way overpriced and battery life isn't good enough.

Tablet PC OS comes with some basic functionality when coupled with a digitizer.... ala pen.

Yes, you can convert speech and hand writing/printing to text for use in many apps.

However.... and I stress this. The real power of the tablet platform comes from the application you run on it... and not just any application, but one that was specifically written/coded with Tablet in mind.

There are numerous apps out for the legal, medical/healthcare, and insurance fields that make the tablet as a platform very powerful, and a huge productivity booster...

For the consumer.... at least for now... I think Tablet sucks.

Funny you ask that.... Last year I went to NAR as a vendor.... NAR=National association of realtors.... THeir big trade show thingy is what I went to.

There was one company demonstrating some tablet software. That was last year...There either has to be even more apps for real estate now, or that one app has gotten better.

I know when I used to work for a appraisal company, there were some rumors of some of the appraisal software being written for tablet pcs. I don't know if they have these out yet, if thats the real estate apps you were referring to. ACI and Wintotal had some stuff made specifically for pocket pc, I'd imagine tablet software would be even easier to use.
