Outside of Palm's Graffiti, I'll take a qwerty keyboard. I can type faster on my Treo than the demo in that video. It does look like a good alternative to trying to use pictures of keys on a screen to type.

I hate T9 as well, but it's still faster than using the number pad to type out a text message 1 letter at a time (at least for me).

Oh man. When we got the HTC Touch in I tried it out. That was the worst texting experience of my life.

I can't believe you said something positive about a Treo. I hated my Treo with a passion. I do miss bejewled though.

Ha! I already have this feature on the writingpad app for my ipod touch. It's cool, but takes awhile to get used to.

the demo on the mobile device looks a lot slower than T9... must have a lot of overhead

T9+initial learning period makes it possible for me to chat in realtime.

Depends on your phone though, some are pretty daft and don't learn the most used words.

My personal record for outbound texts in one month was just over 10k.

I am pretty damn fast with full QWERTY and the BB SureType on my Pearl. I can smoke anyone using T9. And just try typing in technical words or url's with T9.

I recently started using Cootek's TouchPal on my AT&T Tilt, and I like it. It's light years ahead of the default on-screen keyboard. I still use the qwerty keyboard for texting, and most other stuff though. I just downloaded TouchPal because the beta version of Opera Mobile I'm using has a bug that doesn't take input very well from the qwerty keyboard. Occasionally, I'll use it for short texts because I can just tap them out on the screen with my fat thumbtip.

And? I can easily do 10k texts in a month.

I'm up for the challenge, but there's no real way to mediate it.

To type "Hello how are you" on my blackberry takes 17 keystrokes.

Typing the same thing in ABC mode takes 21. And that's a bad example, because a lot of the letters in that phrase fall as the first letter on the keys.

I can pretty much guarantee you that typing a whole 160 character text will be faster using T9. The reason it's not faster for you is because you are not used to using it.

I have had phones where mutlitap is the only option, and there is no question that texting on the blackberry is faster. I also forgot that the blackberry's letter layout is different than a normal phone. So it may be more than 21 keystrokes on a normal phone keypad with 3 letters per number.

It is safe to assume that we can hit keys at the same rate, the difference is the number of keystrokes.

I don't see the number of keystrokes being that important. Its more about knowing exactly what keys and symbols are where.

And I don't do the stupid abbreviated words when I text. Full words, appropriate punctuation.

My 7600 and 3.06 P4 are too slow, plus I would need to buy a new controller. I use the PC exclusivly for FPS games.

If they want to force T9 on people, then I need not buy it. Period.
