T7500 2.2Ghz Always Running At Full Speed?

Hi everyone, I recently got a laptop with a C2D T7500 processor. I noticed that it runs at the full 2.2Ghz ALL the time...I thought there's supposed to be some kind of frequency scaling, where it slows the speed when idle? I've checked the speed with EVEREST and Notebook Hardware Control. Any insight would be great, thanks.

check your bios and make sure than c1e and eist are enabled. Also, open task mgr and make sure that there isn't something running in the background that is loading your cpu all the time. my T7250 immediately drops down to 6x200 when there's no load on the cpus.

Check your power settings. If they are set to Home Office/Desk or Always On then AFAIK it won't downclock the CPU.

Where do I locate this..."C1E" and "EIST"? I've checked the BIOS before for something in relation to frequency scaling, but don't remember seeing anything by those names. Also, I noticed in EVEREST that my CPU Multiplier and CPU FSB changes when idle, but CPU Clock remains the same (2.2GHz). Also my power settings is set to Portable/Laptop.

you can access c1e and eist (and hundreds of other power options) within windows from a program called RMclock. Right mark cpu clock utility.

It's not beginner friendly though, so watch out and do a backup first

CPU multiplier X FSB= CPU speed.

OK I'll take a look at RMClock.

Myocardia, I examined the CPU Multiplier and CPU FSB changes a bit closer, and it seems whatever it changes to, it always turns out to be about 2.2GHz (ex. idle = CPU Mult. 16, CPU FSB 137.15 / with some usage = CPU Mult. 6, CPU FSB 365.72).

I downloaded RMClock, and according to its "CPU Info", my CPU is throttling fine. It slows to about 800MHz at idle. So I guess EVEREST is bugged or something?

I found the option for EIST; its checked, but the option is greyed out. As for C1E (Enable Enh. Halt?), its unchecked. I havn't checked it yet, since I don't know what it is. :/

Also, under Intel Core 2 family advanced features, for "CPU type selection", DESKTOP is selected. The other options are Auto-Detect and Mobile. Should I change this?

I'm sure that's because you have a laptop, and it's just confusing Everest.

C1E is alot like SpeedStep, although they do two totally different things. This article explains it pretty well. EIST (SpeedStep) is much more important than C1E. There may be some reason that C1E is turned off by default with your laptop. You'd have to contact the manufacturer to find out for sure.

That's up to you. Most (newer) laptops automatically change from Laptop/Mobile to Desktop, when you plug them in. If you change it to the laptop setting, it will be continually turning off your hard drive, to save battery power (even though you're using AC power), which isn't good for the hard drive.

I'm going to assume that you're using vista b/c that cpu is so new. If you're on vista, you can change your system power settings, when to shut off the monitor/hd/etc by doing the following: right click the desktop/personalize/screen saver/change power settings. I hate vista btw...

Bryan, I downgraded to Windows XP Pro because some of the software I use is unstable in Vista.

Running CPU-Z will tell you what your current CPU speed is.
