I'm looking to get a new laptop. I was wondering if there was much of a difference in performace between these two when playing games. The difference in price is $94.

I have only been able to find benchmarks comparing the Core Duo and Core 2 Duo, but non that compared the mobile Core 2 Duos to each other.

Thanks for any help.

I'd probably buy the faster processor, since it's only $94 more, but if that means that you need to settle for a cheaper video "card", then get the slower processor, along with the fastest video you can afford. The video card is 90% of the difference, when gaming, between any two systems.

I went for the 7200, also got the ATI X1400 video card (in a Dell E1505 Inspiron). Was it worth it? No idea, won't get to find out for another week or two either. I took it for the 2GHZ 25% bump in clock speed from the 1.6. Should help delay my next purchase for a long time. That's what I'm telling myself anyways.

i have the dell 6400 similar to e1505

my specs are

T7200
x1400
2gig ram

its serving me well . wished i could have gotten a bigger hd tho . 120gig just wont cut it

cs source is playable (as in good frames) . but not at 1680x1050 (at that resolution its still "playable" but not for me....)

T5600 and T7200 have Virtualization Technology, T5500 DOESNT

only difference on the T7200 is the 4MB cache and of course more clockspeed.

T5600 is a better choice for the future, BUT T7200 is only $50 more

There are no benchmarks comparing the two, only single benchmarks vs older core duos or same core 2 duo. The important thing to buy in a laptop is a Graphics card and lots of ram(and maybe a 7200rpm HDD), it helps a lot.

Why would one need a good graphics card in a laptop ? That's what Desktops are for.

7,200 RPM drive ? That leads me to another Q. How much more of a battery drain are 7,200 RPM drives ? I have heard they REALLY chew up the battery and add loads of heat....

I thought I'd bump this.

Anyone saw any benchmarks comparing meron t5xxx and T7xxx ?
Or meron vs turionx2

Also, if you had to choose between L2 cache and RAM (ie, either t5500 with 2MB L2 + 2GB RAM OR t7200 with 4MB L2 + 1GB RAM - what would you pick?

For gaming? Save the money and put it towards a better GPU. If you are STUCK with integrated graphics, then, no it won't make much of a difference to upgrade. Only thing you could do is add more memory if you aren't maxed already.

Believe it or not, some people do play games on the go. If you're a gamer, it's nice to be able to do so and pass the time on a long flight or in a hotel room.

Besides that, some people ONLY use a laptop and don't give a crap about a huge stationary desktop. Those people are obviously much more prominent on NBF than AT, though. But they are out there.

That's why they make gaming GPUs available in laptops.

No, I've been looking for similar benchies myself. Where are they?

Go for the Merom. Intel has ruled (and currently still does rule) the mobile CPU arena.

Probably the T7200 with 1GB if the 1GB was a single module, simply because it's much cheaper (not to mention easier) to add a gig of RAM than to upgrade the CPU.

One thing to consider...
Isn't the 5500 a lower wattage than the 7200? The battery would probably last longer on the 5500. I'm not sure by how much, though.
How much does the 4mb vs 2mb cache make?
