T510 with normal drive - need something lighter!

I have a T510 and while I love it, it's way too heavy and big. I like the big screen, but I don't like how heavy it is.

I've thought about selling my T510 and going for a T410s and just paying the difference... or perhaps using this laptop as a home-use-only machine and buying a T410.

Would it be worth buying a solid state drive and putting it in my T510 to make it a little lighter? Or should I just try to find a cheap used T410s and use the T510 as is for a home machine? Not sure on costs of solid state drives, but I don't need anything big... 20 GB maybe.

I really like my T510, but have never considered it "heavy." It has gone with me all over the US, Europe, South America, SOuth Africa, and the Caribbean. I consider it good exercise. If it gets to be too heavy, I may stop travelling. Are we really becoming a nation of candy asses? 🙂

BTW - the difference in weight of a SSD and a 2.5-in HDD is a matter of ounces. The T410 and T510 don't differe all that much. Get yourself a tablet if you really can't handle 6-7 lbs.

Hello my name is Jeffrey and I work for ASUS Customer Loyalty Team

If you put an SSD in you will love how fast it boots up. It will make your laptop a little lighter but nothing really noticeable.

Regarding about solid state drives a 32gb starts around 50 bucks, but if you look around the web you may find something cheaper.

If you have any questions feel free to email me at cl-jeffrey@asus.com

Is 7 pounds too heavy to carry around? D:

OK - let's put that in perspective. The weight of a Samsung 830, 512GB SSD is about 61 grams. (These figures are hard to find because they are truly insignificant)

The weight of a Seagate Momentus 500GB is 114 grams.

That is a savings of about 49 grams, which, at 28.35 grams to the ounce, would save you about 1.7 ounces.

I don't think that would be detectable in your backpack.

Based on that, my answer to the above question is "No!" 🙂

As others have mentioned, switching from HDD to SSD will net you... pretty much zero noticeable loss in weight.

Best you can do is swap out the Ultrabay with a plastic frame (they sell those) and drop down to the smallest battery available (4 cell? 6 cell? I forget). But even those won't do much.

If weight is that much of a concern for you, just keep the T510 and buy a used X220. Unless you only want/need one machine, then a T420 would work. I'd skip the T410s/T420s.
