T40 vs. 600m: Infuriating laptop information

thelittleprincess: My sources aren't anymore reliable than yours. Steve's estimates, being newer than what I've read in other posts are probably more accurate. Also, since I'm pretty cynical, I'll take the worse case over the happy case.

badga: In my case, the savings aren't so huge as I must declare the lappie at the border. I want to use it as a tax write-off on my wife's business so it has to be legit.

If you do the math on a 58U ising 1.4125 for a "customer buying USD" exchange rate, you get this (US$ / CDN$)

US IBM.com price: 2019 / 2851.84
NJ tax (IBM.com charges it): 121.14 / 171.11
Cdn Tax @ border: nc / 427.78
Total Cost: 3450.72

If you can get the NJ tax back as US travellers do in Canada, that brings it down to 3279.61, but with a US shipping addy it might not happen easily.

At any rate, I think you're right about not waiting. I should just get the T40p, which is still quicker than my desktop even if it doesn't have the 9600.

That ecost site is great. I'm comparing with IBM.ca, but even with duties and express delivery, it seems to be cheaper.

I'l report back later.

how can i get in on this? It sounds good enough for me. I still can't justify spending $2700 on the 2373G1U (T40p)

well, are you a shareholder (or find someone who owns IBM stocks) or "friends or family" of an IBM employee?

Basically, you get 15% off of the retail price. If you call up their small business division and ask about the 20% first time buyer discount, you save an extra $50.

$1656 was yesterday's quote. i found the "greeat" deal yesterday but held off. the price jumped back up today to $1851.55. the price to non-shareholders is $1949 - so savings of only ~$98. i noticed that some savings are now only ~$100 to $200. but a few remained the same - like 237319U is still $1549 to shareholders ($1979 to non-shareholders) for a savings of over $400. but the 2379d6u was just so "damn sexy" as my geeky guy friends would call it.

i also tried to customize the 2379d6u online yesterday only to get the following message:

No such system

Unfortunately the particular system you have requested is not available from this portion of IBM. Please go back and select a different system.

anyone else having this same problem? i can add it to my cart w/out problems, but damn, i wish i had yesterday's price.

You can't customize the D6u because it's the express ship model. No promo items on that either.

Wow, it's good that I got in on the $1656 price yesterday. I am returning my 19U to get the D6u for ~100 extra for a larger faster HD and Radeon 9000 and SXGA+ screen.

Just a warning about Build To Order'ing a T40: it will take a LONG time.

I had ordered a BTO T40 way back on April 30th (PentM 1.6, Rad. 9000, 128MB RAM, 40GB hdd, combo drive, Intel WiFi, 9cell battery) and by the beginning of July they were still telling me it was 2-4 weeks out. Yes, I had waited a little more than 2 months at that time for my custom order. We decided to screw that idea the 2nd week of July and had asked them to send a T40p ASAP. It got here in 5 days.

thanks xm0nkey for the tip - but i think the BYO are different from what i wanted to do - i wanted to pick out a pre-existing model and just customize by adding warrenty, maybe communication stuff, etc. i had already tried the BYO link, but it won't let me pick out the 14.1" SXGA+ (1400x1050) TFT unless i select the 1.6GHz processor. and from this forum, i pretty much am taking everyone else's advice on gett ign the sxga+.

Pennstate - i kinda assumed that you weren't suppose to be able to customize the express ship models - but i did try the customize link on a few of the other express ship models and i did get linked to the customize page. so i figured, it's kinda false advertising to have the customize button for an express model and then be denied, don't you think so? i dunno........i think it just makes the ibm webpag even more confusing and not very user-friendly at all. but damn, they do have nice laptops.

i still don't know when i'm actually gonna purchase one -

Where did you come up with that price?

Wait til the end of each quarter and dell usually emails 10% to 15% off coupons. Stack these with their normal online deals and sometimes other 5%-15% coupons. xpbargains.com usually lists good dell deals. the currents deals on xpbargains are nothing to scream about.

I've heard it's a matter of FCC complaince, but I bet IBM just wants to sell crazy expensive wi-fi cards.
Actually to their credit to have legal wireless gear the antenna and radio must be certified as a unit. Unless they paid to have other manufacturers card certified with their antennas (expensive) it wouldn't be legal. Not to say anyone would come chasing you down, but they are correct.

Ok, doing it that way shouldn't cause any outstanding delays 🙂

Is that reseller reputable? Is the unit new? It's very hard to tell on that site.

they have good reviews from other buyers. Make sure you use mastercard since some MC's can extend the warranty for +1 year and it gives the buyer more protection for online purchases. (last part is true for most cc's)

Thanks to the employee friends and family purchase program I got the 2379D6U for around 1800$... I wish I had seen that 1650$ deal that was happening earlier last week, but I sucked it up and grabbed this. The instant gratification time bomb was ticking in my brain.

Full and unbridled review in a month
