On the XGA screen on a new R40 I have noticed that the gradations (left to right) in the Explorer toolbars are rendered poorly. If you tilt the screen back a bit you can really see the staircasing and the poor blending of colors. On a CRT you get a subtle gradation from left to right.

Have you noticed this on the T40 XGA screen? Is the SXGA+ screen better?

I played a few DVDs on the R40 and could live with the minimal vertical viewing angles but I have not noticed the color and shade staircasing on other LCDs.

Or did my friend get a bad LCD? Is there any way to turn off this effect in Windows XP? I looked at the Appearance control panel and could not find anything obvious.

Thanks.

Welcome to the club :) just j/k. Every LCD have this problem. Even with 32bit color, EVERY LCD produce these effects. I know exactly what you mean. ON a good LCD, you cannot really see it unless really looking for it. IBM T40 SXGA+ LCD is very good (the best of its class IMO) and I can barely see the effect unless I really tilt the laptop and try to find it. The effect is easier to see with 16bit color.

I know exactly what you're talking about. I noticed the same thing on the NEC 17" LCD I had for a while. I think it must be normal. However I have not noticed it on any Samsung LCD's. I'm using a Samsung 152T right now and I can not see it at all no matter what angle I look at it from. Also, I never saw it on my Inspiron's 15" Samsung SXGA+ LCD. I wonder why some LCD's have that problem while others don't?
