T40 Modem - no dial tone?

My modem worked fine for 3-4 weeks. Then one day problems with getting a dial tone.
(tried different wire, locations etc)

I have used PC doctor to test the modem. Appears to be ok except for the no dial tone.
Spoke to IBM went thru some things, they think a bad connector.
Recc I send it in. Reall do not want to do this.

Funnything is that this seemed to happen after I downloaded two files from the MS
Update site.

If you are familar with this, you know that in addition to IBM updates, you can get
windows updates by going to tools in IE and select windows update. Once there,
choose scan your system for available updates.

The two files I downloaded were actually for IBM???They were:

1 - IBM system software update released on March 11 2003.
2 - PHILIPS COMPONENTS network software update released on March 17 2003.

Anyone having modem dial out problems?

Oh yeah...

I have a t40P, so it has wireless and bluetooth. Can;t help but think that all these driver updates
etc...have tweaked all my settings to cause a conflict somewhere. Plus I have winfax pro 9.0 which
can do some strange things to your system at the controller level.

I have gone into propeties to see how a connection is set up and made sure that the agere 97
modem is the default modem and not blue tooth.

Uhm...well, I have probaly loaded and run a couple drivers of the same a couple of times
including the modem drivers, but I have not uninstalled and loaded them back.

I will try that and report back!

Thx

I've been using my T40's modem for about six weeks, and sometimes I hear the dialing, and sometimes I don't. I'm not sure why this is, but I suspect it may have something to do with the driver. Other than that, the modem does not seem to have any problems.

latest update for anyone that cares:

Have not uninstalled and re-loaded the driver yet, but had some success by using a heavy duty phone cable
wire from my main phone. I don;t know, maybe it has more leads inside the plastic head???Still does not
explain why the modem worked b4 with other wiring. Maybe after loading the new driver 2.1.25 i think it was,
it required a different signal?

But heres the glicth...I have to pull it out of the modem socket and then plug it back in in order to do another
dial...For example, if I make the connection, hang up and then dial out again without doing the unplug/plug
routine, i get the no dial tone message...

Think I will just get IBM to send me a new modem and hope my connector is not bad, otherwise i'll have
to send it in I guess. Will also try the driver re-load.

Anyone happen to know how I get to the modem in a t40 ie top, bottom which screws?

if i just needed to occasionally dial out it would not be a big deal, but I will soon have a need to fax out
newsletters to several people one after the after which requires dialing new numbers in sequential order.

Weird...

Ohh yeah thats a dead modem if you ask me 😀
