T3i vs T2i

If you don't mind refurbed (and waiting for it to come back in stock), you can get a T2i with kit lens for about $512 + tax from Canon: http://shop.usa.canon.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_10051_10051_267070_-1. You have to call them and use the Canon Loyalty Program to buy it. There's an FAQ here that will help: http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=948785.

I bought a used Canon camera off of ebay for $8 shipped. After tax and the $8 for the used camera, the T2i plus kit lens set me back about $555.

Did you read the sticky: http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=3625

Describing what you want, such as the focal length, aperture, etc., would be very helpful. Also, did you get the kit lens with the T2i?

There are quite a few posts on this forum for deals people have gotten on lenses off of our FS/FT forum and Craigslist. If you're willing to go used, you'll likely get more for your money.

Yeah, got the kit lens with the T2i. Also, I don't know much about SLRs and it seems like most of the camera lens that were recommended are really out of my price range. It looks like the 50mm f/1.8 is the must have in my price range.

I don't know much about DSLRs either. I just got my T2i with kit lens a couple weeks ago. I've read others suggesting that you get to know your camera inside and out before buying a lot for it. For one, improving your usage of the camera will make more of a difference than a lens will. And two, you'll have a better idea of what focal length and aperture you want for your next lens. i.e. you might be constantly wanting a wider angle than the kit lens, or you might be constantly wanting more magnification, or you might just want a better/faster lens with the same focal length as your kit lens.

I'm with you on the 50mm f/1.8. That'll be the first lens I purchase. I'd also like to get an external mic since I shoot a lot of video, but it's not in the budget right now.

Also, you might already have them, but don't forget about essentials like SD card(s) and camera bag(s). I spent about $140 on just those two things, and it's really easy to spend more than that.

$100 might be the difference in retail price but the "street" value of the T2i is closer to $200 less than a T3i.

Either buy the T2i used for some significant savings or buy a T3i new.

Yongnuo has a lot of models. Make sure the specific one you're getting has ETTL, as they have several meant to be used via poppers only.

The YN468 is the 430EXII equivalent, and can be had for ~100$. The 565 is the 580EXII equivalent.
