I just moved in to my new apartment with 5 friends..(yes we all fit comfortably)....anyways, We will be having a t1 and dsl line for the time being and would like to take advantage of my load-balancing options. Unfortunately, I will NOT be ruuning windows 2k server and will not be able to take that route.

I WILL be running Gentoo Linux, which is basically Linux, but am appearantly oblivious on how to go about it.

Both will be dhcp or maybe just the T1 as Dsl might be PPOPE so I basically will plug the modem to two NICs in the box and one will come out to a router with a switch...

a picture if I may. ...

Dsl Modem ___> NIC0 & 1 on Gentoo box ---> NIC2 on Gentoo Linux Box -----> SMC 4 port router

The router has 4 ports but there are 5 users so we will have a switch...

SO what program could I use for this?

I might have an extra PC so that might be the Load-balancer....Linux if smoothwall GPL 2.0 Doesn't pull it off...probably won't

So...anyone care to decipher this crazy schpeal and give me an answer.

I might as well get a little box and put 2k server on it...

How long is "for the time being" in this case?

One possible option is something like a Nexland Pro800 Turbo.
Dedicated hardware can be nice, especially if your roomies expect and demand some serious uptime for their monthly cost.

:D

Hopefully my answer lies within.

And yes I want to do this the freee way. More of a learning experience than a necessity.

Bandwidth will basically be comprised of two network "indentities" : "kazaa" and WInk* Dc Wink* uhem...

but I would like to learn how to load balance myself....

Like I said, if worse comes to worse, win2k server will do the job...

can anyone verify if IPCop, smoothwall, that other one, or coyote linux will suit my needs....?

Hmm... So the question is, can you loadbalance some traffic out one gateway and some out the other? If linux can be configured with two separate equal-cost default routes, or if it can do policy-based routing, then it might work. (Policy-based routing in that you define an access list or policy to explicitly specify which hosts use which gateways. How flexible is linux as a router?
