Buddy of mine asked me to recommend a low cost (read: not nexus one) tmobile phone... I haven't kept up with android at all, and remember some apps not running on android 1.5, or something like that. Which phone ships or is upgradable now (not q3 2010) to android 1.6+?

thanks!

The one that accesses the correct forum.
Also, Am pretty sure you can root any Android phone and get it to run whatever you want.

Sorry! I swear I meant to post this in the right forum.. My friend in question surely wouldn't be able to root unless it's point and click.... And I've learned never to offer to hack anyone's gear after a failed rockbox installation years ago... Hmmm...

I love my mytouch. I'm posting from it now.

What's important to your buddy and what's his price range? The n1 is under $200....

If he wants it without a contract, I'd recommend the Acer Liquid. You can get them unsubsidized for around $375.

Snapdragon, Android 1.6, WiFi, GPS, 5MP camera, 800x480 3.5" capacitive screen.

It's a nice phone with a nice high-res screen and 1GHz Snapdragon CPU and is not particularly famous so it's a lot cheaper than other options - if you want unsubsidized. If you are buying subsidized, then I'd get an N1.

About the only major problem with the Liquid is that it's not T-Mobile 3G compatible.

Thanks guys - I heavily suggested the Nexus 1 for $179, but did let him know that Mytouch features a newer Android version than the cliq (the two phones he really wanted because they're free w/contract). I didn't even mention rooting, that's a whole can of worms I don't want to get into - providing tech support that I don't want to deal with!
