You Americans are lucky... in Canada the provider can change ANY detail of your plan at ANY time and you can't get out of your contract.

For example, Bell just jacked up texting rates from Unlimited for $10 to 2500 for $10... you can't get out for that.

In my case, they've added a $8.95 SAF and 911 fees to my plan, which were agreed I would not have when I signed up.

No recourse whatsoever

Yeah, what's the deal with "access fees"?

Just another fee for them.

I don't get text messaging. I think I've text message twice ever, only in response to someone's text message.

When you can't speak on your cell, texting is helpful IMO Capt Caveman :)

Same here, I just call the person. Texting just seems... uhh, childish and stupid. If you're in a situation/position where you can't possibly talk to the other person on the phone, then you probably shouldn't be texting either.

Then again, I also don't get into the whole MySpace/Facebook thing. I'm glad I missed that boom.

Its nice when i want to ask my wife, buddy, and his SO if they all want to go out to dinner, what time, and where, and get their responses all back within 15 minutes to send out another text to them that says "OK based on responses how about place X at 5:45pm?"

This is really bullshit.

The costs of text messaging to these companies is basically negligible. The reason they are raising these rates is because they want to slowly force their customers into getting the $5+/month package.

That sounds so fucking impersonal -- sorry. If I want to ask someone something, I just call them up and talk to them. I'd go out of my friggin' mind if I had my buddies all texting me.

It's shit like this that is breaking down our society -- and I'm being serious.

Text messaging is partly responsible for breaking down society.

there are some things that dont need to be said over the phone. if i want to meet up with a friend for lunch, its much easier to text them and have them respond when they are free or when they decide.

You can't talk on the phone while you're driving, but you can text! Please drive your car into the nearest wall.

Agreed 1000000%! The whole texting thing seems rather dumb. No wonder cell phones keep jacking everyone around with ripoff fees and such: this whole generation seems to have this notion that a cell phone is somehow critical to one's survival. I have a cell that I use to occasionally call someone when I'm out and about or in case of emergency. I use t-mobile prepaid, less than $100 per year...... no need to yack on a cell phone all day.

There's an awful lot of /get of my lawn in this thread. Maybe you old fogies should realize that text messaging can be a convenient way to communicate with friends, and not just a tool for twelve year olds to work themselves into a catatonic dystopia. Just as a phone call is best suited for certain conversations, a quick text can be better for others.

But whatever, it just "seems dumb" and you "don't get it", that's fine too ;)

I like texting because it is much quicker than calling voicemail. Just push a button and your text is there. Also I find it a easy way to contact my wife while I am at work. Tmobile has a text messaging site I can use to contact her without a phone.

<a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="https://web.mms.msg.t-mobil......act=smsc&locale=en"><a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="https://web.mms.msg.t-mobile.c...tml?act=smsc&locale=en"><a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="https://web.mms.msg.t-mobile.com/smsportal/index.html?act=smsc&locale=en">https://web.mms.msg.t............&locale=en</a></a></a>

I use Facebook/Myspace to find and contact friends who live thousands of miles away and was able to find people I have not seen in years. It can be a useful tool for those that move around a lot.

Do you use any instant messaging software?

Only for work and not very often. But even for work, it's used mostly to drop a link to a site or a copy/paste of text that I'm sending quickly. For my friends, family, etc., I strictly use the phone. I'm 28. All of my friends are 26 - 29. None of us use text messaging or IM'ing to stay in touch -- we talk.

I just find text messaging, with the shorthand delivery, to be a dumbing down of society that is slowly creeping into our everyday life.

I just can't help think of 2001 A Space Odyssey.
