T-Mobile Galaxy Note 2 KitKat?

My mom is keeping her Galaxy Note 2 instead of putting money on a new phone, so to help her out, I wanted to backup everything, and get the newest update on there that I can get (primarily, to fix some annoying bugs in the ui). She is still rolling 4.3 and since I believe Samsung has released Kit Kat for the Note 2, there shouldn't be any issues updating. However, when I go to update via settings, the phone says it's already up to date. Am I missing something here?

I dont use my Note 2, but it probably would be a bad idea to keep it updated.
Thanks for the reminder.

The bottom icons are something I've tried to fix to no success.

Back it up via kies and then factory reset it. Something is jacked.

I've been out of the custom ROM game for a while but you can't go wrong with a stable cyanogen ROM. Also the Note 2 is pre knox, so going back to stock is pretty basic.

Another potential issue is my mom doesn't remember any of her passwords for email, google play, and other stuff like that. Unless I can back up saved passwords too, figuring out her passwords is going to get ugly, unless of course, kies does that too.

To fix the launcher issue:

Settings > device > application manager > all > select touchwiz home and clear data, reset defaults.

I'm still using a Note 2 as my daily driver as well (Verizon in my case). I am currently running CM12 and the only complaint I have is some bluetooth audio dropouts. The rest works perfectly. One thing to keep in mind is that this is NOT going to be what she is used to seeing on her phone. It is easy to use and fast so I'd say it is still a good option.

If you want to keep the look and feel the same for her things get a little tricky. Since there wasn't a 4.4 ROM released for the T-Mobiles Note 2 any TouchWiz ROM is going to be a bit of a hack.

I'm using a Verizon note 2 still aswell except when I got mine used from someone it was already updated and i can't do anything with rom wise so i just leave it alone. It's not slow by any means.

the problems I've had with cm roms are bluetooth cutting out and sometimes the data doesn't want to work but if you have the chance to change the rom I'd go for it
