If you do go to the store, be sure and checkout the Droid & Eris. My pal got another BB, and now regrets not waiting. If you like the Eris, then you should wait for the Nexus 1, which should be out on the 23rd.

This may not happen, due to the multitouch issues. Verizon supposedly delayed it indefinitely until the issues are resolved.

Hmm.. So if I were to stay with T-Mobile, which phone would be the most comparable to the Droid?

The HD2?

The Nexus One is most comparable to the Droid, seeing as they're both Android phones. I just switched back to T-Mobile myself and got the HD2. Hardware-wise, it is superior to the Nexus One.

Bueller? Bueller? Bueller?

lol

You ask them to port your number and they port it for you. If you buy through a B&M store like Best Buy, it's super easy, they just do it while you're there. If you go through Amazon, I guess you'd have to call up Verizon once you get the phone and have them do it for you. I have never ported a number separately from getting a phone so I don't know exactly how it works.

EDIT: Oh look, here you go:

Do I have to cancel my current plan with T-Mobile first?

And.. the Droid is 200$ with contract through Verizon. I'd be stupid not to go through Amazon.. lol

The more I read about this phone, the more I want it. I don't think my contract actually expires until like April 9th though. Think the 20$ promotion through Amazon will last till then?

Do not cancel your T-Mobile account! If you do, you might lose your number.

Porting instantly and automatically cancels the old account. So make sure you are out of contract and won't have to pay an early termination fee before you port.

I have no clue how long the promo will last. Electronics stores do tend to have better deals than the cell phone providers themselves though. You won't get a $20 Droid but it'll still be less than if you go directly through Verizon. When I switched to Sprint I went to Best Buy and got my phone for $80. Same phone directly from Sprint would have cost $150, and only after a $100 mail-in rebate.

You can always get the Droid from Amazon right now but wait until your contract expires to port the number. You'll have to pay two cell phone bills for a little while but the overlap will only be a week or so.

Amazon's deals for cell phones are always dirt cheap. Even if it isn't $20 next week, it will still be a whole lot less than through Verizon.

If you are going to get it online, buy it from wirefly through bing. It's $20 with $50 cashback :)

Number porting through them is simple. When you get the phone you set it up with Verizon and they will port the number for you.

I got my HD2 through wirefly (I'm about to leave for fedex to pick it up :)) for $99-$50 bing. I bought it on Friday night and they shipped it on on Saturday morning. They got my new number's area code wrong (I recently moved and decided to change phone #) and I just used their chat service on the receipt page to let them know. The number was changed after a day.

Very cool, thanks for the help guys.

So I can have my number ported even after I've already gotten the phone and had it for a week or two?

Question regarding this..
3. Your current and new cell phone accounts must be in the same area code. You cannot request to change your area code and keep only the last seven digits of your phone number.
I'm not sure exactly what that is saying. I currently live in New Mexico, and have an Oregon phone number. I want to keep my Oregon phone number. That shouldn't be a problem, right? I want to keep the whole number, not just the area code.

Also, how do I use Wirefly "through" bing for the cash back? Do I need to sign up for something on bing?

Man, I feel like a n00b. lol

If you want a physical keyboard --> Droid, if not ---> Nexus One.

Seriously BBs feel stone age after using Android 2.1 (Not that they aren't great at what they do, they're just not nearly as capable as the Android handsets).

Yeah, all that is saying is you can't change your number from (971) 123-4567 to (505) 123-4567. I'm sure there are some people who want to keep their old 7-digit number but get a new area code so they're still local, but these days so many people have cell phones with no-extra-charge long distance that the area code doesn't really matter anymore.

As for porting, I'm pretty sure you can wait a little while to port your number and use the phone in the meantime, but I'm not certain. Call Verizon or search at howardforums.com to be sure.

Update:

Welp, called T-Mobile up and found that my contract expired.. today!, so I decided to pull the plug.

Ordered the Droid through wirefly.com with the 50$ bing cashback, and ported my old number. Wewt!

This should be interesting... I'm excited.

I went and played with the phone in the verizon store. The keyboard really didn't seem that bad... I had heard all this stuff about "flat" keys, but they seemed pretty convex to me. I don't think I'll have a problem with it.

You'll be very happy with the Droid, methinks. Android is a great fit for most of us geeks on AT. :)

Love my droid and my fat fingers have no problems with the physical keyboard.
