My pop wants to add another line for himself to our existing t-mobile family plan for an extra $7.99/mo + $35 activation.

If I go to a t-mobile store, they would probably give me a free phone right?

I know there are a lot of deals online for new contracts at places like amazon, but to add to an existing plan?

yes

the person who's account the name is in must go to the store

we have done this , once we got the free phone, last time we got the camera phone for extra $

but i tried to send my wife and the account is in my name , so i had to drive over to the store and meet them to add the line/get the phone

As FoBot mentioned, the account holder must be there to add the new line. You should get a free phone with the additional line but ask/check to see other phones since most of them should come with a rebate that would reduce the total price.

so it must be a t-mobile store? and not a best buy or some random chinadown dealer?

I would imagine any legitimate T-Mobile retailer since the rep is going to make changes to your account and ask you to verify your social with him or her.

they still do activation fees?

Any place that is an authorized resller of Tmoile should be able to do it.

TMobile customer service can inform you about which phones you're eligible for at a discount or for free (added line). The same phone line, as well as the website can display which phones are offered for free or at a discount for current subscribers (must log into account to view).

It's worth noting that either are generally dependent of having service with them for about a year before you may qualify.
