Um, how is this a good deal?

When I got my HTC One, it was $100 down and $20/month for 24 months, for a total of $580.

With this "deal" the same HTC One is now $0 down, but $25/month for 24 months for a total of $600.

You're paying $20 more for the same phone.

I think the point is it's an additional option for those who don't want to pay anything upfront, with a marginal additional cost. Compare that to the plans of the other carriers, and you can see T-Mobile is trying to be the most affordable and flexible of the bunch.

Most consumers who a really cost concious and want to save money will usually purchase a phone outright and go no-contract BYOD, no subsidization, no installment plan.

While i completely agree with you on this.

This is just an option and a method for tmobile to combat those people who say " i can get a phone from ATT for $100 or free." It tricks the average person into thinking they have a deal, when its really just a repackaged deal. Many people never look at what they pay so when they hear FREE they jump in.

Well I thought T-Mobile was moving beyond the shady tactics. The new Jump program and this "deal" are proof that nothing has changed.

Their plans are clearly not for everyone. Not everyone wants to pay $600 for a phone when others are paying $100-200. But there are some advantages to tmobiles plan.

But that's the whole point, they aren't just paying $100-$200. That was the whole fuss behind T-Mobile's "Uncarrier" speech.

Seems like baseline price for these phones have adjusted to match the 0 down monthly rates so you can't even buy a One outright for 580 from them at the moment. Nothing unusual though, their prices fluctuate +-50 all the time.

How does this work with "Jump" program, that lets you upgrade your phone every 6 month if you so wish? Out of curiosity.

Well nobody would be eligible yet. And I doubt they'll have this sort of sale once people are, or at least it'll have a *.

Doesn't need an *, you're still paying the same amount of money. The money down is less, but the monthly is higher, so there's no reason why Jump would be any different with something like this.

I think the point of the whole "uncarrier" thing was that you're not paying subsidized prices if you don't want to upgrade to a new device every year or two. Look at ATT and Verizon right now, if I don't get a new device every 2 years, I lose out. Why? Because I'm still paying subsidized prices whether I am subsidizing a phone or not. With some of the T-Mobile plans, once I finish paying off my device and I choose not to get a new device, my monthly bill should be lower.

If you change phones at 12 months it matters. It equals out at 24months (approximately). It should work out to about half of whatever the down payment originally was.
