T-Bird 850: Temperature question

I just checked AMD's T-Bird data sheet and Cooling Guide (http://www.amd.com/products/cpg/athlon/techdocs/pdf/23792.pdf and http://www.amd.com/products/cpg/athlon/techdocs/pdf/23794.pdf). They say that for T-Birds at 1000MHz or less, the core temperature should be below 90oC and the case temperature should be below 42oC.

My T-Bird 850 runs at 57oC with case at 37oC when I am in BIOS (in other words with no load). Do you think it is acceptable? What is you experience/temperature readings?

YOu can't compare socket A temps, even with the same mb/cpu.

Your temps are within "reasonable" limits. Depending on your ambient air/room temp, you may want to improve you case cooling a bit.

I have a stock heat sink and fan. The CPU is not overclocked. It is a genuine 850MHz CPU. I also have a case fan installed in the FRONT of the case.

I am not sure if that case fan works properly because it does not blow any air OUT of the case. I guess it sucks air in.

Do you think I should reverse it, so it blows air OUT (like the power supply fan does)?

If you have room put another case fan in,try mounting near top of processor so it blows cooler air on to the heatsink/fan of processor I find this works ok,if you cannot do that try one at top of case sucking air out of case, since hot air rises.

Btw if it makes you feel better I get( for 900 T-bird) under full load with my crappy case,49c Cpu & 39c for case this is my highest recorded temps,but my system is still rock stable being everything is within AMD guidelines.

No, you should not reverse the case fan. The fan in the front should be sucking air in and the ones in the back should be blowing air out.

Another question:

The heatsink and fan came with a thermal compound. I did not apply it. Should I? Where do I apply it? T-Birds look different from older Pentiums and K6s. Those used to be perfectly smooth on top. T-Birds have lots of stuff such as rubber pads, core (I think) sticking out, some tiny bridges etc. I am totally confused on how to apply a thermal compound.

The core is the center rectangular part. put the grease on that, and yes, definately use the grease.
