i'm planning on upgrading soon (ie, after the supposed price cuts) but i was wondering. assuming that prices are relative to how they are now, with the 266s around $50 more than the 200s, is it worth it? would i have success taking a 200 chip and overclocking it to 266? thanks for help

Hi there. What motherboard do you have right now? Also, what speed of CPU were you looking at? I use the Asus A7V133 and the 1.2Ghz TBird (200Mhz bus), which came factory unlocked, so I run 9x133 and get the 266Mhz bus. It saves a little on the pocketbook, yes, but how long are you willing to wait? I'd assume that once the 266Mhz bus chips ship out, they are going to set the prices of the 200Mhz bus ones down, so you could probably get the 200Mhz 1.2Ghz cheaper and still run the 266 bus by running 9x133. I guess it depends on how soon you need the CPU and how much you are willing to shell out for a new CPU. Those are just my opinions and experiences and I'm not reccomending anything.

Hope this helps.

well i've been eying the iwill kk266 board. i'm hoping to upgrade after the march 5 price cuts. i guess i could wait longer but as we all know.. as soon as you buy, either prices will go down, or something newer will come out :p basically i'm looking at around $130 for the mobo, $35 for a new power supply, and i'm thinking the cpu will be somewhere around $200. just not sure if i should go with a 266, or a 200 OCed to 266. also, i've been hearing about people getting factory unlocked t-birds.. can someone help me out and explain this? thanks

it seems almost all 1.2 t-birds come factory unlocked as well as some of the early ones. i would't bother spending more on the chip unless i had one of those motherboard that are picky about the fsb like the 8kta3. im not sure about the kk266, something you might want to look into. btw, what powersuply do you plan on geting for $35?
