T-bird 1.4 (200mhz) in original KT7? help!

ok, i have an original model KT7 and a duron 600, and i want to replace the cpu with a 1.4 ghz T-bird. Abit says that for this cpu to work in my board, the L1 bridges MUST be cut. what are the chances if i order one that they won't be? are there any of these cpus left on the market with uncut L1s? i don't know of any place to order from that would be able to tell me something obscure like that? am i safe just ordering one? i'm looking at getting one from newegg.com - are they decent?

help appreciated.

Read everything you can at Paul's Unofficial KT7 FAQ's.

About processors:
KT7/KT7-RAID: 100MHz (200MHz DDR) FSB processors only. Fastest processor supported is the Athlon 1400(100) - but it must have locked (disconnected) L1 bridges. AthlonXP processors are not and will not be supported.

You will have to buy a 1.4 T-bird with the 200Mhz FSB, the newer ones with 266Mhz FSB will not work.

An overclocked T-bird has the L1 bridge connected (unlocked).
A standard T-bird has the L1 bridges open (locked) which is what you want.

right, i'd read that; Abit's page says the same thing. i was just wondering how i could tell before purchasing if the cpu i was getting had the bridges cut or not. but there were two feedbacks at newegg from people who bought the cpu and used it in a KT7, so i just assumed they're indeed cut and ordered one. hopefully it'll work out.

me\<---former Abit KT7R runner. I still have the board...it's in storage right now.

The Athlon XP will absolutely not run in a KT7 board. Period. It will run in a KT7A w/a BIOS flash.

I'm not sure, but I don't think they made Athlon "B's" that ran at 1.4GHz. If you're stuck on a 1.4GHz chip, you'll have to get an Athlon "C" and run it at 100FSB.

This is my opinion. For what you have to pay for a B or C Athlon these days (stock is getting lower, prices are going up) you might as well make the jump to DDR.

I was in the exact same boat as you. Stuck with a KT7 board instead of the KT7A. Stuck in 100FSB-land. I made the switch to an Athlon XP/DDR about two months ago and haven't regretted it once. The difference in speed in responsiveness is like night and day.

i agree that an overhaul would be better, but i'm on a budget and i'm not going to completely redo this box until clawhammer is out. so for $98 i'm going from a duron 950 (oc'd) to an athlon 1.4, assuming it works right. i'm also gonna buy a geforce 4 ti 4200 for a total upgrade cost of around $300. that should breathe new life into gaming for me for at least another year, hopefully... not that i expect it to rule, but it'll be better than the duron/gf1 sdr i have now, for sure.
