I'm running a KuFormula VF1 VGA cooler and love it! I was reading the instruction sheet last night -- never READ it during installation, just looked at the diagrams -- and it said you can use an axial fan with this thing, instead of the squirrel cage.

Don't get me wrong, the rotary fan works great, but there's no braggin' rights -- except for the golden flywheel. I think I'd just as soon be using an orange LED 12cm fan, you know?

I looked around on the web and couldn't find any mention of ppl doing this, although it's mentioned, as a feature, in several reviews...

So, anybody here running an axial fan with their KuFormula? LoL! For that matter, anybody besides me even have one? :)

Hrm...

Now that I've had a chance to translate that article... they say all the usual stuff, about how astonishing the KuFormula cooler is, yada, yada, yada, but it appears that the (ahem) hot setup is to use a 92mm fan -- not a 120 -- to replace the squirrel cage. That's probably because the 120mm fan has a bigger hole (dead spot) in the middle.

A 92mm fan cools almost as good as the rotary fan, and it's quieter, according to their test results, so that would be the way to go, if I was so inclined! :)

Rotary fans are heavy and have high dBA for the cfm they drive.
Thier advantage? They can drive air through high resistance very well indeed.
That's why they are used to drive air through home A/C&heating ducting.
I would avoid these types of fans for any desktop application.

Next time I pull my video card, I'll weigh the rotary fan. I want to install some new ram sinks anyway, and switch to MX-1 grease on the base. It seemed very lightweight when I installed it, i.e. I didn't notice it being 'heavy', but who knows? I really wasn't paying attention to the weight...

You're right about the air flow -- and the fins on the heat tubes are designed to make proper use of it. A lot of the fins are hooded, for want of another word, to channel the air through them -- and since you used the analogy -- almost like something you would see in a HVAC air handler, or whatever. I don't *think* a normal axial fan would work nearly as well, but they got decent enough results in the test (above).

It's a pretty amazing cooler, performance-wise. Before I installed the KuFormula, my vid card was probably the hottest device in my computer -- at least to the touch -- it doesn't have a heat monitor.

The Sytrin KuFormula VF1 Plus HSF is kind of big (won't work with SLI, for instance), has a funny name, and looks rather odd -- but it does work as advertised! ;)

I wasn't bad mouthing the cooler and if it's designed for that fan type, all the better.

Silverstone offers fans like that for retail sale.

I know you weren't Galvanized...

Look, you don't have to worry about offending me with your comments -- any of them. You're on my Buddies List (really)!

That's what you should be worried about... :D
