Hello,
My problem basically is that I cannot get my system to run @ a FSB of 133.
I recently upgraded to an MSI K7T Turbo2 MB, and an Athlon XP 1700+ CPU.
The motherboard supports clocks of 133, and there is a jumper to change from FSB of 100 to 133. If i leave it on 100, system runs fine, but only @ 1.1GHz (default multiplier of 11 * 100). If it change it to 133, the system will post video info, show it to be a athlon XP 1700+, perform the memory test, then hang.

I have swapped the positioning & placement of my 2 DIMM's around. No change. I even borrowed a friend's DIMM and tried that. Same thing. (yes, they are all PC-133).
I have tried 2 different video cards in case it was some sort of weird AGP issue (Matrox G400 MAX + Geforce 2 GTS), but get same results.

The system generally runs @ ~60 deg C , so I do not think it is an overheating issue.

All I can thing of is it may be some sort of Power issue? I am only running a 250W PSU, maybe upgrading to a 300W would fix the problem?

Any advice anyone could give me would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

Try clearing the BIOS with the jumper before attempting to boot at 133, then go into BIOS and load defaults.

See if that does it. Also, are you running the latest BIOS? If not, get it.

Yes, latest version bios. Yes, have tried clearing cmos via jumper. Alas, no dice.
I am fairly sure the issue is a hardware one, not software. It is just a matter of working out what.
Hopefully can try CPU in friend's system and see how it goes. If works, then must either be mobo or PSU.

Since we are talking about an athlon CPU here, I would run right out and get an AMD approved 300watt PSU immediately. They didn't set the requirement for 300watts just for the fun of it. But that 60C degree temp has me a little worried as well. What HSF are you using that it gets that hot?

A 250W PSU can power an xp 1700+ if you are pretty light on fans/drives, but it would be a good idea to get an amd approved 300w or higher. As far as the CPU temp, 60C is pretty dang high, my 1700+ OC'd to 1800+ (138 bus) runs at about 40C idle, 45C while gaming. I am using the retail box HSF.

What type of HSF are you using? and do you have thermal paste/pad on it?

I've the ms-6330 k7t turbo v3.0 raid & XP 1600+, and I had the boot problem also. The way I fixed my problems was to flash my bios to 3.2, use only one stick of high quality ram(I use corsair, crucial isn't good enough according to the MOD on the MSI board), keep my CPU temp to around 40C (I went overboard and got a 8000rpm fan for my hsf, but I don't have the boot problems anymore). Hope this helps.

Thank you all for your suggestions! I have solved the problem and it turns out that it *was* a cooling issue. Basically I forgot to remove the sticker which comes covering the thermal pad on the heatsink. This is what was causing the strangely high temps. Runs @ ~40C now @ 133 FSB. Idiot! Sigh, it is always the simple things that you overlook!

This is great news. I always get high tempatures on my MSI K7T266 Pro2 with XP1800+. It has a SK-6 with Sunon 60mm 23CFM. I get 50C and higher tempatures idle on this system. I even applied Artic Silver 3.... any ideas? Of course, I can't reach 133FSB as well...

I recommend you get a good quality 60mm HSF that can handle at least 32cfm like the Just Cooler P-8000. Also consider adding a couple case fans (I like Enermax thermal controlled) if you haven't done that yet. One other thing to consider, heat rises so you would be well advised to have your tower as low as practicle for your needs.
There are other measures one can take to help cooling like rolling your ribbon cables lengthwise until they look rounded so they take up less space and then move them out of the path of the air current inside you box. A larger box can help a great deal as well. Keep the room temperature down. If you get chilled you can always put on a sweater. Industrial computer rooms are always cold for a very good reason. Oh, one other thing is to check the Arctic Silver web site to be sure you applied it correctly. I know, you are sure you did. What could it hurt? No one will see you do it so your pride can stay in tact.

I recommend you send the board back to MSI for replacement. The only reason I say this is that I have been through 4 MSI Pro2-Ru boards because of a defect that caused it to crash only at 133 FSB. I won't go into all the details but it you visit the forums at msicomputer.com, you will see that this problem is widespread with MSI boards. From what I have seen and read it looks like they have had a continual problem with the 133FSB and if you replace it enough you will get a good board. Like I said, I went through 4 before I finally got two that did not have the problem.
